Stress is the term used to describe the physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioral responses to events that are appraised as threatening or challenging. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in more integrative stress-reduction techniques that attempt to address not only a person's mental and physical ailments, but also his or her interpersonal, emotional and spiritual needs (Eisenberg et al., 1990-97, 1998). Complementary and alternative medicine interventions such as yoga, rhythmic breathing exercises, meditation, relaxation, and chanting techniques have significantly reduced stress-induced psychological disorders (Gupta et al., 2006; Michalsen et al., 2005; Smith et al., 2007). The present study examines the effect of three months mindfulness training versus breathing exercises o1n physio-cognitive aspects of stress. The study was conducted on a sample of 30 participants (10 participants in each group) having high stress level with average age of 22 years. Intensity of stress was assessed with the Cohen's (1988) 14 items perceived stress scale and PGI Health Questionnaire by Verma (1985) was used to assess the physical as well as psychological wellbeing. Physiological Correlates of the stress were measured by Finger Pulse Feedback, EMG, Respiration, and Electro sleep feedback. Participants were randomly assigned to Mindfulness, Breathing Exercise group. Applying the pre post test design the intervention continued for the period of three months. The findings revealed that the mindfulness training, breathing exercises have threshold impact in reducing the stress and improving the well being among participants. Study also revealed the restoration of normal levels of EMG, respiration and pulse feedback in experimental groups.- Reducing Negative Emotions amongst Adolescents: The Role of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Suicide is a complex, multidimensional and multi-determined, preventable act that has been studied from philosophical, sociological, psychological and clinical perspective. Well stated by Louw&Louw, 2007 that adolescence today is unfortunately not only a period of preparation for and transformation to adulthood but under the present era of globalization it has become a period in which adolescents increasingly face many new challenges which they are often ill-prepared for. Adolescent suicidal behaviour varies across the studies and countries due to differences in population characteristics. Dialectical behaviour therapy under different adapted forms has proved its efficacy in treating the individuals with self-harm behaviour including self-cutting, suicidal thoughts, urges to suicide, para suicide and suicidal attempts also. The primary objective of the present research study was to observe the effect of adapted form of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in managing the suicide risk amongst adolescents. In the present study authors kept 20 participants on therapeutic intervention for the period of one year. The participants recorded to have high levels of suicide ideation on the measure of The Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation - BSI and high levels of suicide potential on the measure of The Zung Index of Potential Suicide (IPS). Participants were trained exclusively on the skills training modules of DBT in individual as well as group settings and their post intervention assessment of depression and hopelessness levels were recorded with the respective tools after every four months (baseline, four, eight and twelve months) respectively. Descriptive statistical analysis (mean and standard deviation) and paired t-test was used to test the significance of mean. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has been considered as a chrome disorder, which generally continues beyond childhood, into adolescence and adulthood Willoughby, (2003). Researches revealed that the regulation of emotions have been found to be difficult among children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD, Barkley(2006). In line with this, Goodman, (2007) reported that the low self esteem and self doubt are commonly associated with ADHD. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of mindfulness therapy on self esteem of ADHD adolescents. The adolescents with ADHD symptoms were diagnosed with Conner's 3 ADHD rating scale(2008) and thirty three participants were selected with age ranging between 13 to 16 years. The self esteem was assessed with Rosenberg self esteem questionnaire (1965). The mindfulness therapy was implemented for six months and five days a week. The outcome of the present study was analyzed by applying paired t- test on pair 1 (baseline and middle phase), pair 2 (middle and post) and pair 3 (baseline and post). It has been observed in the findings of the study that the ADHD adolescents learned to regulate&reflect the emotions in much better way. The mindfulness therapy found to be effective and produced significant effects by reducing ADHD symptoms as well as in enhancing self esteem of ADHD adolescents. It can be concluded with the evidences represented in the present study that mindfulness therapy can be considered as therapeutic tool in enhancing self esteem of ADHD adolescents.Keywords

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a complex disorder with diverse challenges arising at each new phase of a child's developmental span. The clinical presentation of ADHD consists of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The American Psychiatric Association 2013 documented ADHD as "impairing disorder". There is a growing body of research on the effectiveness of mindfulness for children and adolescents with psychopathology reported by Black et al. (2009); Burke (2010). Jon Kabat Zinn (2003) described mindfulness as the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmental to the unfolding of experiences moment by moment. The rationale for using a mindfulness therapy with ADHD is built on several levels of potential impact, that the mindfulness based therapy focuses on the ability to enhance, control attention and to reduce automatic responses Teasdale et al.(1995). The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of six months mindfulness therapy on attention deficit of adolescents manifesting symptoms of ADHD. Sample: The target sample of the study comprises of 33 adolescent with the age group of 13 to 16 years of private schools. The sample in the present study was assessed for attention deficit by different measures. The D2 Attention by Brickenkamp and Zillmer (1998) was administered to measure sustained and focuses attention. The symptom of inattention was measured by Conner's 3 parent rating scale by Conners (2008) and further attention again was assessed with Brown's ADD Scales by Brown (2001). The outcome of the present study was analyzed by applying paired t-test on [pair 1 (baseline and middle phase), pair 2 (middle and post) and pair 3 (baseline&post)]. The finding of the present study indicates the considerable improvement on the alertness, attention, concentration and focus. The practice of mindfulness based therapy strengthens the ability to sustain and monitor the attention. The outcome of the present study is also consistent with the findings of Heeren and Philippot(2011);Semple(2010),that the mindfulness therapy enhances performance on the executive functioning such as attention, working memory and cognitive control. The evidence suggesting the potential benefits of mindfulness interventions with adolescents manifesting symptoms of attention deficits.Keywords

The present study was conducted on a sample of 800 students with age range of (15 to 21). The basic objective of the study was to know the correlates of HIV risk perception among youth population. The tests of HIV Risk Perception (Singh & Saini, 2010). HIV Knowledge (Carey et al., 1997), Impulsivity (Barratt,1994), and Sexual Sensation Seeking (Kahchman et al., 1994) were used in the study. A suvey questionnaire of 65 items was used to know the people opinions about the casuses of honor killing in north mdia. It has been observed in the findings that irrationale and negative attitude towards females, attaching prestigious tags to females, community pressures, attitude towards youth and intercaste marriage are some of the observations indicating their role in honor killing.The study reveals the role of cognitions and cultural influences in commiting the crime in the name of honour.Keywords

Everyday newspapers, magazines and media channels are full of news of robberies, kiddnappings, rape and murders. Crime reports are especially broadcasting on news channels indicating that crime is everywhere and all efforts to thwart it seem to be failing. Despite all governmental rule and regulations, crime is at alarming stage all-around. Viewing police records in certain areas, it was found that there are some villages where crime rate is very low and in others it is very high. Reasons for committing a crime may include greed, anger, jealously, revenge, pride and now-a-days one more thing that is emerging is youths from high profile families do crime for entertainment and false recognition. Investigations have shown that youths engage in crime activities for excitement, admiration and rewards. School bullying, domestic violence, community violence, religious masscrace, strikes, etc. have made social thinkers, police administration, policy makers and social scientist to unearthen the ischolar_main causes of such activities. The present study was conducted on a sample of 450 persons (75 from each village) covering the six villages (three low crime and three high crime profile villages) of district Hisar, Haiyana. The data was collected randomly and no criteria were fixed. A survey questionnaire was used to assess the attitudinal aspects related to social acceptance of crime, attitude towards alcohol and drug abuse, police, politics, gambling, youth attitude towards crime. lt has been observed in the findings that attitudinal influences potentially affect the crime proneness in rural areas.Keywords

The children with ADHD generally carry some symptoms with them as early as preschool age and continuing throughout adolescence and even into adulthood. American Psychiatric Association, DSM V, (2013) described ADHD as "Persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development” and listed it as neurodevelopment disorders rather than under diagnoses usually first made in infancy, childhood, or adolescence. It has been revealed from studies that the children & adolescents diagnosed with ADHD have special academic, social and emotional needs and all this makes the life of ADHD more challengeable. Aggression is a form of behaviour in which one expresses his feelings or emotions in negative ways which harm, hurt or injure self or others. Aggressive behaviour reflects the negative connation in behaviour and is considered as unhealthy or unhelpful behaviour pattern particularly in case of ADHD. Hampel, Manhal, Roos, & Desman, 2008 reported that the youth with ADHD have impaired ability to interpret and manage their emotions and behaviours thus found to manage stressful situations with avoidance and aggression. In the present study the adolescents with ADHD symptoms were diagnosed with Conner's 3 ADHD Rating Scale (2008) and thirty three participants were selected with age ranging between 13 to 16 years. Conduct problems can be understood as the behaviour patterns which are inconsistent with the expected behaviour of that particular developmental period. The conduct problems scores were calculated by SDQ Robert Goodman (1997). The mindfulness therapy was implemented for six months five days a week. It has been observed in the findings that the mindfulness therapy has effectiveness in reducing the aggressive behaviour and conduct problem of adolescents with ADHD.Keywords

Work is necessary for every human being as it is carried two types of values in human life that is intrinsic value and extrinsic value. We perform lots of activities throughout life. Working conditions have the potential to influence human life to a significant extent. These conditions include income, basic human need, self-esteem, emotional competence and feeling of self-confidence. Emotional intelligence has been known as relevant factor which is related with quality of working life. The purpose of the present study is to explore the relationship between emotional competence and quality of work life of call center employees. The present study was carried out on a sample of 150 employees and they were recruited from 4 call centers from different cities of Haryana. The subjects were selected on the basis of stratified random sampling. The major instruments used in the present study were quality of work life scale given by Donald and Emotional Competency Scale propounded by Harish Sharma and Dr. Rajeev Locha. The findings of the study indicate that there is positive correlation between emotional competence and different aspects of quality of life.Keywords

The present study examines the factor structure of Peer Pressure Scale (PPS) for a group of 446 adolescents in the age group of 16-19. Initially 53 items were selected and item analyses, item discrimination and factor analysis was conducted. Based on experts' comments, primary analysis and factor analysis, few inappropriate items were discarded and 29 items were retained for final version of the scale. The reliability co-efficient Cronbach's alpha was calculated .82 for the final version of the Peer Pressure Scale. The final version of the scale comprised of four factors with 55% of variance. More future researches are suggested on different sample for reliability and improvement of the factor structure of the scale.Keywords

Adolescent is a very critical and crucial period of life. Adolescents are exposed to different kind of peer influences ranging from health risk behaviors to how to behave in social environment. Peer pressure has both positive and negative effects on the psyche of adolescents. Present study focuses on the relationship between family climate and peer pressure among adolescents. The present research work was carried out on a sample of 150 young adults (75 males & 75 females) having age range of 18-21 years. The sample was taken from different educational institutions. The major tools used in the present study were Family Climate Scale propounded by Beena Shah (1990) and Peer Pressure Scale by (Singh & Saini, 2010). After collection of the data, statistical analysis has been made with the help of statistical tools of descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment method of correlation and Independent sample-t test. It has been observed in the finding that there is inverse relationship between positive family climate and peer pressure. The finding of the study also showed that there has been significant gender difference on some dimensions of family climate and peer pressure.Keywords

The present study was conducted to examine the relationship between mindfulness and aggression among youth. The problem of aggression and violent behavior is of major concern to the psychologists and researchers. The incidence of aggression is increasing day by day. The level of aggression can be reduced by mindfulness practices. Mindfulness is a psychological state of awareness. It is a process of bringing one's attention into the present moment. In the present study, mindfulness attention awareness scale (Brown & Ryan, 2003) was used to measure mindfulness and Buss and Perry aggression questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992) was used to measure aggression among university students. Correlation analysis was done to find out the relationship between mindfulness and aggression. The result showed a negative and significant relationship between mindfulness and aggression.Keywords

In the modern era, criminal offending among youth is a major problem around the world. It is a common occurrence in which children and adolescents involve in delinquent behavior (Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1990). Juvenile delinquency is a serious offence in any country that is the involvement of the youth in violent crimes. Poverty, low education and broken families are directly related to higher rates of delinquency (World Youth Report, 2003). Mental health problems that include stress, anxiety are commonly found in juveniles. The issue of delinquent children and adolescents is the burning issue in India by which many young people damage their lives (Abolmali, 2010). Research demonstrating that mediation based approach would be feasible with a group of delinquents which have been shown to improve psychological well-being and reduce mental health issues (Hawkins, 2003; Himelstein, 2011). Mindfulness approaches have resulted in reduced stress and anxiety among youth offenders. Meditation based program may be a way of effective treatment for juvenile delinquent (Bylund & Reed, 2007). MBSR play vital role in the improvement of the juvenile's emotional health problem.Keywords

Health is something which influences a person's whole life directly or indirectly because it includes all the aspects of life such as physical, mental, social, and spiritual. Lifestyle of any individual leaves its marks on not only an individual's physical health but on personal, professional, psychological, emotional, spiritual, social as well economical part of life. Adolescence is a period which is full of hormonal, physical as well as psychological changes. In the same way, gender also influences the lifestyle of an individual due to different factors related to it. Males and females both have different habits, choices, schedules, routines, responsibilities and different challenges so their lifestyle is. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in health-promoting lifestyles among adolescents. The sample included in the present study was of 600 adolescents of which 300 were male and 300 were female (16-19 years). The data in the present study was collected with the help of Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II developed by Walker et al. (1996) to achieve the study objectives and then, the obtained data from the sample was put to statistical analysis and inferences were made. The total mean of all 52 items describes the overall health promoting lifestyle. The total mean score of male was (M=23.08, SD=3.880) and the mean of female was (M=23.94, SD=4.328) with the mean difference of -.867[t (598) = -2.582, p<.010] depicting the significant gender difference. The scores of significant mean difference on health promoting lifestyles of female adolescents are higher than male adolescents which are also supported by many previous research studies. In conclusion, we can say that female adolescents have better health promoting lifestyles than male adolescents.Keywords
