Abstract

Depression has emerged as one of the most severe health threat in modern times. According to a World Health Organization report, depression affects 12 in 100 people in the world and by 2020, is going to substitute cardiac problems as the subsequent most widespread universal sickness. The intend of this study is to see how amalgamation of psychotherapy and spirituality along with various alternative therapies can help in managing depression without adversely disturbing the holistic well-being of the depression patient. The design of the study was parallel group pre-post experimental one. The experimental group was given treatment of Psycho-spiritual Package (PSP) and the control group was not given any such treatment. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) developed by Beck, Ward, Mendelson and Erabaugh (1961) was used to measure Depression level. Individual items of the BDI assess mood, pessimism, sense of failure, self-dissatisfaction, guilt, punishment, self-dislike, self-accusation, suicidal ideas, crying irritability, social withdrawal, body image, work difficulties, insomnia, fatigue, appetite, weight loss, bodily pre-occupation, and loss of libido. Using statistical analysts the null hypothesis was rejected at .01 level of confidence suggesting positive effects of Psycho Spiritual Package (PSP) in reducing Depression level of experimental group compare to control group. Detailed literature review suggests that no single therapy can be considered complete and effective antidepressant and hence only an integrated model can be considered as an effective depression management tool. Psycho-spiritual Package can widely be used for psycho therapeutic purposes in hospitals for holistic health and well-being of depression patients.

Abstract

Recent studies of Internet influence on behavioral disorders of its users have created quite a polarized ambience. On the one hand, there are those who believe that the Internet is a new better medium for enabling various patterns of communication and social relations. On the other hand, others maintain that Internet use can lead to social isolation and other forms of psychological disorders, like depression and loneliness. Internet is expected to become a basic form of social interaction in the near future, and consequently one of the major factors of socialization and constitution of one's psychological identity. Due to that fact, the aim of this work is to indicate methodological and conceptual flaws of the studies which have attempted to make a connection between mood disorders and the Internet, so as to establish the base for future studies of the psychological consequences of Internet development. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between internet addiction and depression, loneliness, and social isolation. Participants were 100 senior secondary students in the age group 16-18 years (50 Males & 50 Females) who were enrolled in High School in and around South Delhi, in India. In this study, three hypothesis were formulated and tested using Pearson`s Correlation method, t-test and multiple regression. Tests like the Internet Addiction Test, UCLA, Beck Depression Inventory and Social Isolation Scale were used. The study found internet addiction was positively related to depression, loneliness and social isolation. However there was no gender difference observed in the present study related to internet addiction, depression, loneliness and social isolation. The conclusion is that increased internet usage results in psychological problems like depression, social isolation and loneliness amongst adolescents. It is recommended thus that the usage of internet should be limited by the adolescents so as to prevent psychological symptoms to take form.

Abstract

Encoding strategies are significant in determining individual's emotional control and mapping personality traits. The purpose of the present study is to investing association between encoding strategies, personality and emotional factors. This study documents result of responses trom 50 students trom undergraduate and post graduate program using psychological tests namely Neo Five Factor Inventory-3 (NEO-FFI-3), Emotional Intelligence Scale, Verbal Encoding Test and Visual Memory Test. Extroversion and introversion. Self-control (SE) and managing emotions (ME), simultaneous or sequential processing style, verbal encoding and verbal memory were measured. Inferences are drawn on student's preferences to attend to external stimulations versus preference to introspect along with preference to simultaneous visual processing or sequential visual processing. The presence of self-control of emotional responses is an important factor that controls the occurrences of several responses, which possibly will contribute to understanding of conflicts and personality problems. Absence or reduction in sequential processing of signals in verbal and visual modes could weaken rational processing abilities and strengthen holistic processing of relevant and irrelevant issues, which could again pose decision making difficulties. Development of emotional control must occur during the developmental stages and social conditioning plays very important role in deciding the development of such self-control. Present research work can facilitate ground across several domains for further investigations and tries to highlight that there is an acute need to address these problems from neuroscience and social psychology point of view, especially when developments of such controls are minimally present within the social network.
