Abstract

Obesity is defined as an abnormal growth of the adipose tissue due to an enlargement of fat cell size called hypertrophic obesity or an increase in fat cell number called hyperplastic obesity or a combination of both. The present study examines the self-esteem and locus of control among obese and non-obese adults. The sample consisted of 60 participants, including 30 obese adults and 30 non-obese adults. To assess the level of self-esteem Rosenberg self-esteem scale was used and to assess the locus of control Rotter's locus of control scale was used. Food habit and concern toward body weight among obese and non-obese adults were also tested. Obtained results show that obese and non-obese adults do not differ significantly in their level of self-esteem and locus of control. Obese and non-obese adults do not differ in their food habit, but obese adults tend to have more concern towards their body weight compared to non-obese adults.

Abstract

The current study aims at exploring life satisfaction across gender and socio-economic status among middle adults. The study consists of 150 middle adults (male=75, females=75) selected from 3 different socio-economic status groups (high=50, middle=50, low=50). The sample was drawn from Mangalore city. The age of the sample ranged between 40-55 yrs. Kuppuswamy's socio-economic status scale (R-2012) and Life satisfaction scale (Kumar, et.al 1988) was administered to the participants. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post hoc test of Turkey's HSD. The results revealed that females have significantly higher job satisfaction than males. Findings revealed that adults belonging to high socio-economic status have significantly higher mental satisfaction, job satisfaction, family satisfaction, marital satisfaction, and overall life satisfaction compared to adults from lower socio-economic status groups. Adults belonging to middle socio-economic status groups have significantly higher mental satisfaction and job satisfaction when compared to adults from lower socio-economic status groups.

Abstract

Adolescence is the stage where important psychosocial changes and development takes place. An individual's experience as a child or an adolescent contributes to her identity development. Those experiences can be pleasant or unpleasant, tragic or unimportant. One of the tragic experiences that an individual can experience in life time as early as adolescence or child hood is sexual abuse. The present study aimed at understanding the level of psychological well being among adolescents who have experienced sexual abuse and adolescents who have not experienced sexual abuse, the study is exploratory in nature. The sample for the study included 91 college going females of the age range from 15 to 18 years. Out of 91 participants 41 had the experience of some kind of contact sexual abuse and 51 adolescents did not have any experience of sexual abuse. Psychological well being scale developed by Carol Ryff (1995) was employed to assess the level of psychological well being among the participants. The results of the study analyzed using independent samples t test revealed the significant difference between the two groups in the areas of environmental mastery, positive relationship with others, purpose in life and self acceptance. Mean scores indicated that adolescents with no experience of sexual abuse had significantly higher environmental mastery, positive relationship with others, purpose in life and self acceptance compared to adolescents with the experience of sexual abuse. In the areas of autonomy, and personal growth no significant difference was observed between the two groups. The present study indicates that adolescents who have experienced sexual abuse face significant difficulty in accepting one's own qualities and is disappointed with their past experience where as adolescents with no experience of sexual abuse feel there is meaning to their present and past life, and make effective use of surrounding opportunities. Overall results of the study provide insight about the significant impact of sexual abuse on the psychological well being among adolescents.
