The present investigation aimed to study Body image concern in relation to Peer and Media influence in adolescents. The sample comprised 160 adolescents (Females=80, Males=80) in the age range of 15-19 years. They were randomly selected from various private schools and colleges of Patiala city and belonged to middle class families. The subjects were administered Revised Body Shape Questionnaire (Mazzeo, 1999), Peer Influence Scale (Mukai,1996) and Socio-cultural Attitude Towards Appearance Questionnaire (originally developed by Heinberg et al., 1995) to assess body image concern, peer influence and media influence respectively. Correlational Analysis of the data showed that body image concern was positively related with peer and media influence. Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis revealed significant contribution of peer influence&media influence in explaining the variance in body image concern.Full Text

The purpose of the study was to examine the role of self-efficacy on Quality of Life of people living with HIV/AIDS. The sample of the present investigation comprised 225 subjects (male=116 andfemale=109) in the age range of 20 to 50 years from lower and middle class families. Only those subjects were included who were able to understand, read and write hindi/Punjabi/English. The HIV/AIDS patients were randomly selected from various ICTC and ART centers in Punjab. Self-efficacy was studied by using HIV self- efficacy (HIV-SE) questionnaire (Shively et al., 2002) and Quality oflife was measured by using MOS-HIV Health Survey (Wu, Rubin et al.,1991). Pearson Product Moment coefficient of correlation was computed to study the role of self-efficacy in quality of life. The results revealed that various domains of self-efficacy like managing depression, managing fatigue, managing symptoms and getting support were found to be positively correlated with physical functioning, cognitive functioning, mental health and QOL.Keywords

The present investigation aimed at studying the differences amongst five different types of couples on communication patterns. Total sample comprised 200 subjects and were admmistered ENRICH Couple Scale. Five types of couples were identified, i.e., Vitalized, Harmomous, Traditional, Conflicted and Devitalized couples. These types were further clubbed into satisfied (Vitahzed & Harmonious), Traditional and Dissatisfied (Conflicted and Devitalized) categories. One-way ANOVA was applied followed by scheffe's test to see significant differences amongst the means. Obtained results revealed that maritally satisfied (vitalized & harmomous) couples differed from martially from dissatisfied couples (conflicted & devitalized) on communication patterns, the latter group showing poorer communication skills. The traditional type showed better communication skills than the dissatisfied but not better than satisfied group.Keywords

The present investigation attempted to assess the role of adherence in Quality of life (QOL) amongst coronary heart disease (CHD) patients. The sample comprised 300 subjects: 150 patients (both males & females suffering from CHD, i.e., MI or Angina), and 150 normal healthy controls (both males & females) in the age range of 30 to 55 years and from middle & upper middle class families. The subjects were administered the Medical Outcome Study (MOS) Measure of Patient Adherence (Hays, 1993) and The RAND Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire: SF-36 (Ware,1993) to assess general and specific adherence to medical regimen of patients and their Quality of life (i.e., Physical and Mental health-related QOL) respectively. Correlational Analysis of the data revealed positive correlation of general adherence & specific adherence recommendations with both physical & mental health-related QOL for CHD patients. Whereas for normal controls, specific adherence recommendations (e.g,. regular exercise, cut down stress, etc.) were negatively correlated with both physical & mental health-related QOL. Further, specific adherence behaviours were positively correlated with only mental health-related QOL of CHD patients whereas for normal controls these were positively correlated with only physical health-related QOL.Keywords

The present study investigated the role of relational risk factors in substance abuse. The sample comprised 300 participants 18 to 19 years old from different schools and colleges of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. To select the subjects with substance abuse problem from the general population a screening measure was administered. Apart from those standardized measures like Parental Monitoring and Peer pressure were administered. Application of correlation and step wise multiple regression revealed that peer pressure positively contributed to substance abuse whereas the correlation and contribution parental monitoring was negative.Keywords
