Abstract

In the present era millions of people are challenged with chronic debilitating disorders which can be controlled but not cured. So long term medication and its adherence are important factors in successful management of chronic diseases. Non-adherence not only leads to serious health consequences but also raises the healthcare costs. The present study compares the patients' attitude of medication adherence towards four chronic diseases i.e. diabetes, arthritis, asthma and hypertension. A purposive sample of 160 patients comprising of males and females in the age range of 30-50 years was drawn from OPDs' of various departments of PGIMS, Rohtak and private clinics of Rohtak city. Patients' medication adherence was assessed by using Medication Adherence Rating Scale. Results indicated that overall 66.9% patients showed adherence. The patients with diabetes showed maximum adherence (80%), followed by asthma (70.73%), hypertension (65.85%) and arthritis (59.90%). ANOVA followed by t-tests indicated significant differences between patients of different chronic diseases. Socio-demographic factors did not show any significant effect on medication adherence except for education and duration of illness. A few strategies to strengthen the attitude towards medication adherence are discussed.

Abstract

Adolescence is specifically turbulent as well as dynamic period of one's life. Major physiological, cognitive and behavioral changes take place during this period necessitating need for establishing new attitudes, values and interests. The changes may also contribute to emotional tensions. These changes are experienced differently by males and females. Therefore, the present investigation was designed to explore gender differences in self esteem, academic anxiety and insecurity amongst adolescents. A two group design was adopted for the present study. Groups comprised of male and female adolescents. Each group consisted of 100 subjects with an age range of 13-16 years. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale by Morris Rosenberg, Academic Anxiety Scale for Children by Singh and SenGupta and Security-Insecurity Inventory by Tiwari and Singh were administered to 200 adolescents. Data was analyzed by using t-test. The results of the study showed that male adolescents scored significantly higher on self esteem whereas the feeling of insecurity was significantly higher in female adolescents. No significant difference was found between two groups on academic anxiety. The study infers that low self esteem and high insecurity in female adolescents need to be addressed.

Abstract

Yogic breathing is a unique method for balancing the ANS and influencing psychology and stress related disorders. Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) is a form of yoga practice that emphasizes rhythmic breathing exercises. The present study was undertaken with an aim to study the effect of SKY on stress levels as well as mental health of participants. The pre and post study involved a sample of 14 (7 males, 7 females) with age range from 23 to 60 years. Perceived Stress Scale, Self Esteem Scale and Mental Health Index which measures anxiety, depression, loss of behavioral/ environmental control, general positive affect, life satisfaction, psychological distress, psychological well being as well as a global mental health were administered. Results indicate that there is a significant decrease in anxiety and depression levels, increase in GPA, and increase in level of psychological well being, more life satisfaction and improved MHI score post intervention. Although no improvement was observed in the feelings of psychological distress, there was a highly significant rise in levels of psychological well-being. However, no improvements in the levels of self esteem or emotional ties have been observed. Implications of introduction of such programs in meeting the challenges of day to day life as well as for addressing specific problems have been discussed.

Abstract

Children with developmental disabilities put great impact not only on the lives of the children but also on the lives of their caregivers especially the family members. Fostering a child with intellectual disabilities resulted in increased risk of mental agony, frustration, stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms and other psychological problems among the primary caregivers. The worry about child's future, economic burden, lack of emotional or social support and excessive physical care put parents into psychological distress affecting their mental health. The present study is an attempt to assess and compare the mental health of primary caregivers having children with mild and moderate intellectual disability and parents having children with average intelligence. A multi group design was employed. A sample of 150 healthy parents (50 with mild intellectually disabled children, 50 with moderate intellectually disabled children & 50 having children with average intelligence), was administered Mental Health Inventory by Veit and Ware (1983). Data was analyzed by using one- way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Significant differences were evident on the domains of mental health i.e. on psychological distress and psychological well-being among primary caregivers having children with mild and moderate intellectual disability and parents having children with average intelligence.

Abstract

The coronavirus crisis and the restrictive measures that many countries are taking to contain the outbreak can have a negative impact on people's mental health and well-being. Isolation, physical distancing, the closure of schools and workplaces are some of the challenges which affected almost everyone causing trauma, stress, anxiety, fear, uncertainty, depression, grief and loneliness during lockdown period. The consequence on mental health seems to be instant that would carry on for a longer period of time. It becomes imperative to make an attempt in analyzing the well-being of general population. The aim of this study was to assess the psychological well-being of general population during covid-19 lockdown period. This study included 60 healthy individuals (30 male and 30 female) within the age group 20 to 50 years who were assessed through online survey from Mid-April to Mid-June. Psychological General Well-being Index was administered to assess the psychological well-being. Results were analyzed by using descriptive methods which indicated anxiety, depressed mood and psychological well-being to be moderately high in participants but on self-control, vitality and general health they were found to be average. Further significant gender differences were also evident on various dimensions of psychological well-being. The implications are discussed.
