Abstract

Present study was intended to study and compare the orphans (single and double) on general health and securityinsecurity at different age groups (6-12 yrs and 13-18 yrs). A sample of 150 participants was selected randomly, out of which 75 were single orphans (lost one parent) and 75 were double orphans (lost both parents). All the participants were boys with age range of 6-18 years and divided into two groups. The participants were selected on the basis of avalibality from Ladhot Gurukul, Jan Sewa Sansthan children Home, Lakhi Ram Arya Anathaleya children home, Rohtak and children home Rewari from Haryana state. PGI Health Questionnaire and securityinsecurity inventory were administered on them. Results revealed that significant difference was found between single and double orphans of both age groups. However, the two types of orphans did not differ significantly on general heath and security insecurity.

Abstract

The present study was conducted in Rawalwas Kalan and Rawalwas Khurd villages of Hisar district. Forty slow learner (70-90 IQ) and forty normal (90 and above IQ) children in the age group of 6-10 years were selected for the sample. Significant differences were observed in VMI skills of normal and slow learner children. Age-wise differences in VMI skills of slow learner and normal children were also found. For motor skills, significant sex differences were found, boys were more competent than girls. The study demands awareness on the part of family members, school teachers and all those who concerned with children to explore and enhance visual-motor integration skills of slow learners.

Abstract

Psychological well-being is one of the most cherished goals of humanity. It defines the idea of "good life". The present study is an attempt to examine the psychological well-being among senior citizens and their socio-economic variables. A sample of 60 elderly people of above 60 years from the Hisar city of Haryana, were taken as respondents from families and old age homes. Their psychological well-being was measured by using the PGC Morale Scale and for socioeconomic variables self-prepared interview scheduled was used as a tool. The statistical results of the study stated that factors, age, residence place, spouse partner, health status and income source were significantly associated with the psychological state of the elderly people whereas sex was not significantly associated. Therefore, they need special attention from family, policy makers, and those who work with elderly people.

Abstract

The concept of temperament directs our attention to important aspects of child individuality that must be considered in parenting. Using a sample of 120 families having two children who were between 10 and 17years of age and their parents, this study assessed the relationship between child temperament and parental differential treatment and was undertaken in purposively selected Hisar city, of Haryana State. Thereby, the total sample was consisted of 240 children (120 older and 120 younger siblings) and 240 parents. Both parents were informants for temperamental qualities. Malhotra's Temperament Schedule (Malhotra and Malhotra, 1988) was used to study child temperamental qualities. Comparative distribution of younger and older siblings on different temperamental qualities depicted that younger siblings were more social, had positive moods as well as more active, and whereas, older siblings were relatively more attentive. Berkeley Parent-child Interview Schedule developed by Ablow and Measelle (1993) was used to study PDT. In the face of social norms for equal treatment, the present study provided evidences that mothers and fathers often treat their offspring differentially. As per siblings' perception regarding PDT in the domains of warmth, over half of mothers and fathers both favoured younger siblings more than the older siblings, whereas, nearly same percentage of both parents were relatively more hostile to the older siblings. Correlation results clearly established that children's temperament statistically predicted maternal differential warmth and hostility treatment of siblings in the family. Implications for intervention programs targeted at decreasing differential treatment are discussed.

Abstract

Depression in the children merits special mention because the early onset of depression in children is associated with poorer prognosis and a severe and recurrent course in adulthood. Researchers are in favour of using multiple informants when assessing children for possible depressive disorders. The current study examined depression in a sample of 80 children aged between 11-15 years. Using baseline data from multi-informants i.e. children, parents, and teachers, this study examined depression agreement across two or more informants. The Children Depression Inventory (CDI) (Kovac, 1985) was used to measure depression using child, parent and teacher version. The study indicated that as per child and teacher report, one-fourth of total sample was detected with depression symptoms but parents reported slightly higher percentage of children with depressive symptoms (31.3%). Mean comparison results revealed that reports of multi-informants were significantly different from each other. The results of the study provide confirmation of earlier findings on depression. The study will increase awareness in public and among stakeholders about mental health disparity among children in Haryana. Implications for the integration of multi-informant assessment information are discussed.

Abstract

Stress can have a significant effect on an adolescent's long-term physical and mental well-being. An understanding of the role of unmanaged stress during early adolescence is critical for the prevention of chronic diseases such as depression. The purpose of the study was to explore levels of stress, and use of coping strategies among adolescent's urban residential and non-residential schools of Pilani.200 adolescents, 100 from residential and 100 from non-residential schools constituted the sample. Independent variables considered were age, sex, ordinal position of child, socio-economic status of the family and type of school. Adolescents stress and coping styles were the dependent variables. In the process of investigation. “A life stress scale” by Agarwal and Naidu (1986) and coping questionnaire by Folkman and Lazarus (1985) were used. Results revealed that majority of adolescents in both settings experienced moderate levels of stress and reflected moderate adoption of coping styles. Further, comparative distribution on stress and coping styles reflects that adolescents of residential school experienced higher levels of stress and coping styles than adolescents of non-residential schools.

Abstract

The coronavirus crisis and the restrictive measures that many countries are taking to contain the outbreak can have a negative impact on people's mental health and well-being. Isolation, physical distancing, the closure of schools and workplaces are some of the challenges which affected almost everyone causing trauma, stress, anxiety, fear, uncertainty, depression, grief and loneliness during lockdown period. The consequence on mental health seems to be instant that would carry on for a longer period of time. It becomes imperative to make an attempt in analyzing the well-being of general population. The aim of this study was to assess the psychological well-being of general population during covid-19 lockdown period. This study included 60 healthy individuals (30 male and 30 female) within the age group 20 to 50 years who were assessed through online survey from Mid-April to Mid-June. Psychological General Well-being Index was administered to assess the psychological well-being. Results were analyzed by using descriptive methods which indicated anxiety, depressed mood and psychological well-being to be moderately high in participants but on self-control, vitality and general health they were found to be average. Further significant gender differences were also evident on various dimensions of psychological well-being. The implications are discussed.
