During college years students encounter many challenges which are personal, emotional or related to academics. Today there is increased accountability for student academic success as students in colleges and universities can face new developmental, behavioral and academic challenges that can exhaust their abilities leaving them behind. Counseling is one of the most sought after support services that can increase academic achievement and social competence among college students. Counseling is the process based upon psychological foundations which proves beneficial for students who are both normal as well as those having disabilities in post secondary education. Good counseling programs should encourage students to build not only their professional counseling skills, but also their personal strengths and expand their awareness of self and others (Corey, Corey, Callanan, 2006). This paper will analyze the importance of counseling support services in higher education.
