The present investigation was carried out at Department of Horticulture, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Madurai during Kharif 2015 with 32 pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch. ex. Poir) collected from different parts of Tamil Nadu to identify small fruited high quality genotypes. The genotypes CM-9, CM 3, CM 14 (3.40) recorded more number of primary branches, the highest vine length was recorded in CM18, CM10, CM15 (10.66, 10.50, 9.67m) genotypes. The higher petioles were recorded in CM21, CM18, CM4 (26.63, 24.77, 24.50cm). The higher leaf length was recorded in CM5, CM11, CM1, CM9, CM8, CM23, CM2, CM31 (14.03 to 14.93cm) genotypes. The leaf breadth was highest in CM15, (22.00), the higher inter nodal length in CM17, (13.53cm) were recorded. The first male flower in seventh node was observed in CM23, CM1, CM32, CM30, CM4, the first female flower appeared early in CM12, CM26, (20 and 21st node), the days taken for male flowering was ranged from 47.20 to 54.20 days and for flowering ranged from 51.73 to 63.27 days. The early female flowering was recorded in CM29, CM20 and CM17. The lowest sex ratio was recorded in CM30 (13.58). The days taken for fruit maturity less in CM29, CM28 and CM5 (83.47, 87.27 and 87.53 days). The genotypes CM29, CM28 recorded higher number of fruits per plant (4.40 and 3.13) and less fruit diameter (17.80 and 18.33cm), fruit length (44.40 and 49.73 cm), fruit weight (0.97 and 1.11kg), 100 seed weight (10 and 15g). The highest yield per plant was recorded in CM12, CM23, CM3 (9.48, 8.54 and 7.60kg). The highest TSS content (100Brix) in CM13, acidity (0.78) in CM27, ascorbic acid (10mg) in CM23, moisture content (99%) in CM30, CM31, beta carotene content in CM29, and CM28 (0.99 and 0.89 mg). The CM29 and CM28 genotypes were identified as small fruited type among the genotypes studied.

An investigation was conducted at Department of Horticulture, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai during 2016-2017 to study the per se performance of pumpkin hybrids evolved with diallel analysis with thirty hybrids were obtained through diallel mating design with six parents viz., P1:Acc.No.MDU CM23-Thirumangalam local, Madurai district, P2:Acc.No.MDU CM28-Oddanchatram local, Dindugul district, P3:(Acc.No.MDU CM29-Harur local, Dharmapuri distict, P4:Acc.No.MDU CM12, Department of Horticulture, AC and RI, Madurai, P5:Acc. No.MDU CM1-Attur local, Salem district, P6:Acc.No.MDU CM31-Rajapalayam local, Virudhunagar district for yield and quality traits in pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch. ex. Poir). The per se performance of parents and hybrids showed that the parents P1 (8.46), P4 (9.36) and P6 (4.55) were high yielding and bigger sized fruits. Among the thirty crosses, six cross combinations viz., P1×P3 (12.38), P1×P2 (11.79), P1×P5 (8.18), P1×P5 (11.66), P1×P6 (8.55) and P4×P1 (12.08) recorded higher values for yield per vine, fruit weight (6.13 to 10.15 kg), vine length (6.54 to 8.22) , higher sex ratio (17.05 to 24.06). The smaller sized fruits were obtained in five cross combinations viz., P2×P1(1.54), P2×P3(1.78), P2×P4 (1.79), P2×P5 (2.02) and P2×P6 (1.68) with the fruit size ranged from 1.54 to 1.79 kg.Keywords

The present study on diallel graphical analysis was conducted at Department of Horticulture, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Madurai during 2016 according to hayman on growth, yield and quality traits of pumpkin. Six advanced pumpkin genotypes viz., P1: Acc.No. MDU CM23-Thirumangalam local, Madurai district, P2: Acc.No. MDU CM28-Oddanchatram local, Dinddugul district, P3: Acc.No. MDU CM29-Harur local, Dharmapuri district, P4: Acc.No. MDU CM12-Department of Horticulture, AC and RI Madurai, P5: Acc.No. MDU CM1-Attur local, Salem district, P6: Acc.No. MDU CM31-Rajapalayam local, Virudhunagar district was used to investigate the genetic control of the growth, yield and quality traits are dominance or over dominance and in each the genotypes whether the traits are controlled by dominant or recessive alleles. All the six parents and their 30 F1 hybrids were raised in the field in Randomized Block Design with two replications. The various growth, yield and quality traits viz., vine length, number of primary branches, days to first male flower, days to first female flower, node to first male flower, node to first female flower, sex ratio, days to first harvest, number of fruits per vine, average fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, yield per plant, flesh thickness, number of seeds per fruit, total soluble solids, beta carotene and dry matter content of fruits were recorded. The data were subject to Hayman’s genetic analysis to investigate nature of expression and their alleles on the growth, yield and quality traits. The study showed that dominance alleles were present in P4 parent for vine length, sex ratio, number of fruits per plant, fruit yield per vine and beta carotene content. This parent also possessed recessive genes for traits such as, number of primary branches and days to first female flower. The parents P1 and P2 possessed recessive alleles for vine length, number of primary branches, number of fruits per plant and beta carotene and these parents also inherit dominant and recessive alleles for the traits, days to first female flower, sex ratio and fruit weight.Keywords

The study was conducted at Department of Horticulture, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai. The hybridization programme was carried out during Kharif 2017 and 24 hybrids were evolved through Line x Tester mating design. Six inbreed lines (L) were used as female parents viz. L1was PKM-1(High yield), L2wasCO-1 (High yield), L3was Virdhunagar Local (Earliness), L4was Seranmadevi local (More number of fruits/plant), L5 was Arka Sujath (High yield), L6was Arka Sumeet (High yield) and four inbreds as male parents were tester (T), T1 was Periyakottai local ( High length of fruits), T2 was Alathur local (Fruit diameter), T3 was Kannapatti Local (Node to first female flower appear), T4,was Srirampuram Local (More Female: Male ratio). The twenty four hybrids were evaluated during 2018 summer season to identify superior hybrids suitable commercial cultivation during summer season. The performance of parents and hybrids showed that the parents T1 (1.02kg/vine) and T2 (1.01kg/ vine) were high yielding. Among the twenty four crosses, three cross combinations viz., L3 x T2 (1.35kg/vine), L3 x T1 (0.96kg/vine), L4 x T1 (0.93kg/vine) recorded highest yield per vine. The high fruit weight was recorded in L3 x T1 (315g), L4xT1 (270g), L4xT4 (250g). The highest number of fruits per vine was recorded in L3xT2 (4.27), L3xT1 (4.25) and L3xT3 (4.05). The yield per hectare was high in L3xT1 (5.38t), L3xT2 (3.82t) and L4xT1 (3.74t). The high total soluble solids was observed in L6xT2 (6.00Brix) and L1 xT3 (5.00Brix) hybrids. The highest crude fibre content was estimated in L4xT4 (0.59mg/100g), L3xT2 (0.58mg/100g) and L4xT3 (0.57mg) hybrids.Keywords
