- Enhancing Propagation Efficiency of Banana cv. MONTHAN (ABB) through Micropropagation

An investigation was carried out at Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory of Horticultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore during 2012-2013. Shoot tip of banana cv. MONTHAN were cultured in MS medium fortified with different growth regulators (BAP @ 4, 5 and 6 mg l-1) either alone or in combination with NAA (0.5 mg l-1) and kinetin (2 mg l-1) to study the influence of growth regulators on multiplication rate. The data on number of multiple shoots, days for multiple shoot induction and micro shoot length were recorded. MS+BAP 6 mg l-1 + kinetin 2 mg l-1 recorded maximum number of multiple shoots (5.07). MS + BAP 6 mg l-1 recorded least days for multiple shoot induction (27.06 days) and highest micro shoot length (6.73cm). Further to enhance multiplication best growth regulator combination (MS + BAP 6 mg l-1 + Kinetin 2 mg l-1) along with different concentration of coconut water (5, 10 and 15%) and casein hydrolysate (100, 200 and 300 mg l-1) were supplemented. MS + BAP 6 mg l-1 + kinetin 2 mg l-1+coconut water 5 per cent recorded the highest number of multiple shoots at all the intervals of subculture (5.13). The best growth regulator combination (MS+BAP 6 mg l-1 + kinetin 2 mg l-1) along with B5 vitamins in specific to different thiamine concentration (5, 10 and 15 mg l-1) for further multiplication were supplemented and B5 vitamins with thiamine combinations did not increase the multiplication rate. The degree of efficiency of shooting was found to be dependent on type of hormone.Keywords

A wide array of environment-friendly plant bio-regulators (PBRs) has received attention of researchers in horticulture. Bio-regulators, alternatively known as plant growth regulators (PGR) are natural or synthetic chemicals that affect the expression of biological responses in plant tissues. PBRs are used more extensively in tree fruit production than in any other horticultural or agricultural commodity, and they are essential for effective and profitable production. It plays an important role in growth and development of horticultural crops by sustaining their productivity and improving the quality of produce. The efficient utilization of plant bio-regulators can provide a dramatic change in fruit production despite all success in high density planting and improving quality yield and storage life of the fruits without any spoilage. Different plant bio-regulators like CPPU, salicylic acid, brassinosteroides, strigolactones, jasmonates, etc., have wide scope for exploration and application but are not widely accepted in commercial fruit production despite of their immense usefulness coupled with low hazard to human health.Keywords

Banana requires large quantities of nutrients for sustaining its production apart from its growth and development. As banana is a large plant with bigger size of the leaves, it exhausts major and minor elements from the soil in larger quantities and the soils require a continuous replenishment of nutrients. Banana being an exhaustive crop, proper manuring and fertilizer application has to be done for obtaining good yields, with better quality fruits. The inorganic nutrients are absorbed by the plants in readily assimilable form whereas the organic manures take time for distribution of nutrients as they need to undergo decomposition in soil. Application of inorganic fertilizers in split doses along with organic manures in combination with biofertilizers in an integrated manner is the best practice for sustaining production, yield and quality in banana as the indiscriminate usage of inorganic fertilizers deteriorates the soil health through volatilization and mineralization and causes loss of nutrients through leaching besides polluting the environment.Keywords

Commercial fruit trees are usually formed by the combination of a ischolar_mainstock and a scion to broaden the adaptability of scion cultivars to soil and climatic conditions, facilitate agricultural management, and/or increase productivity. In general, closely related cultivars and species tend to be compatible, but taxonomically distant plants often manifest incompatibility. The physiological, metabolic and molecular mechanisms that cause incompatibility remain unclear and several hypotheses have been proposed to explain it, mostly based on herbaceous species. We sum up different reasons that may have an influence on graft success: inherent system of cellular incompatibility, formation of plasmodesmata, vascular tissue connections, and the presence of growth regulators and peroxidases. Understanding the spatial organization of the graft interface is important to the evaluation of new ischolar_mainstock genotypes and to the development of new grafting technologies. An early and accurate prediction of graft incompatibility has great importance because incompatible combinations could be avoided while compatible ones could be selected. The complexity of incompatibility and the mechanism behind the reactions have been investigated in several ways. More research is needed to fully understand the mechanism of graft incompatibility, particularly in woody plants. This knowledge is essential to develop molecular markers useful in ischolar_mainstock breeding programmes.Keywords
