The density (ρ), viscosity (η) and ultrasonic speed (U) (2 MHz) of pure solvents: 1,2-dichloro ethane, chloroform, THF and 1,4-dioxane and copolysulfonate (PSAE) solutions have been investigated at 303, 308 and 3130K. Various acoustical parameters such as specific acoustical impedance (Z), isentropic compressibility (κa), Rao’s molar sound function(R), Van der Waals constant(b), internal pressure(π), free volume (Vf), intermolecular free path length (Lf), classical absorption coefficient (α/f2)cl and viscous relaxation time (τ) have been determined from ρ, η and U data and correlated with concentration at temperature. A fairly good to excellent correlation between a given parameter and concentration is observed at all temperatures and solvent systems studied. Increase or decrease of acoustical parameters with concentration and temperature indicated existence of strong molecular interactions. The effect of temperature, concentration and solvent on acoustical properties is discussed. The positive values of solvation number (Sn) suggested structure forming tendency of the polymer.Keywords

Ultrasonic velocity (2 MHz) and acoustical parameters of poly (R, R', 4, 4'-cyclohexyli-dene diphenylene toluene-2, 4-disulfonates) (PS-3: R=R'=Cl and PS-4: R=CH3 and R'=Cl) solutions investigated to understand the effect of methyl and chlorine substituents on molecular interactions. The linear increase of ultrasonic velocity (U), acoustical impedance (Z), Rao's molar sound function (R), Van der Waals constant (b) and internal pressure (π); and nonlinear increase of classical absorption coefficient (α/f2)Cl and viscous relaxation time(τ) with C and decrease with T; and linear decrease of isentropic compressibility (κS) relaxation strength (r), free length(Lf) and free volume (Vf) (nonlinear) with concentration (C) and increase with temperature(T) suggested the existence of powerful molecular interactions and hence solvophilic nature of the polymers, which is supported by positive values of solvation number (Sn). Structural modification (entanglement) is found above 2% concentration in 1,2- dichloroethane and THF systems. The linear increase of Sn with C and T indicated the presence of predominant polymer-solvent interactions over polymer-polymer interactions. The decrease of Sn with T is due to breaking of structure by predominant thermal energy over molecular interaction energy.Keywords

The density, viscosity and ultrasonic speed of pure solvents: 1,4-dioxane (DO), tetrahydrofuran (THF), ethanol (EtOH) and (2E, 6E)-bis (4-hydroxy benzylidene)-4-methylcyclohexanone (MBHBC) solutions of different concentrations were investigated at four different temperatures: 298, 303, 308, and 313 K to understand the effect of solvents and temperature on molecular interactions. Various acoustical and thermodynamic parameters such as acoustical impedance, adiabatic compressibility, internal pressure, free volume, inter molecular free path length, van der Waals constant, viscous relaxation time, classical absorption coefficient, Rao`s molar sound function and solvation number of MBHBC solutions were determined using density, viscosity and ultrasonic velocity data and correlated with concentration at the different temperature. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy were derived using viscous relaxation time data. Very good to excellent correlation between a given parameter with concentration and temperature is observed. Derived parameters supported existence of strong molecular interactions in MBHBC solutions. It is observed that MBHBC has structure forming tendency in DO, THF and EtOH systems.Keywords
