The main objective of this study is to evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of Xanthuim strumarium L. Disc diffusion and broth serial dilution tests were used to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract on two Gram-positive strains (Bacillus subtilus NCIM 2718, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923) and three Gram-negative bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Klebsiella pneumoniea ATCC 70063 and Eschrichia coli ATCC 25922). The ethanol extract of the ischolar_main of plant was subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis. Free radical scavenging activity of the ethanol extract at different concentration was determined with 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide free radical free radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxide inhibition activity. Ethanol extract showed inhibition in all the organisms under test. The result from the present study shows that the ethanol extract of X. strumarium has antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity may be attributed to the presence of tannins, flavonoids and triterpinoids and phenolic acids in the ethanol extract. The antibacterial and antioxidant activity exhibited by the ethanol extract can be corroborated to the usage of this plant in Indian folk medicine.Keywords

A mixture of Xanthine, Xanthone and Xanthosine isolated from the ischolar_main of Xanthium strumarium L exhibited antitumor activities against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma in Swiss albino mice. Animals were pre-treated orally with the extract at a dose of 200mg/kg, 25 and 50mg/kg body weight for isolated compounds of chloroform extract and then after 24hrs EAC (at a dose of 2×106 cells/mouse) administration and following an 18hr fasting; mice were sacrificed for studying of antitumor activity. The decrement of tumor volume, packed cell volume and viable cell count were observed in both lignans and isolated compounds of chloroform extract treated animals and compared with only EAC tumor bearing mice. Treatment with test compounds increased the survival time and normal peritoneal cell count. Hematological parameters, PCV which were altered by tumor volume inoculation, were restored considerably. Thus, this study was an attempt to evaluate the preventive and curative role of X. strumarium lignans in tumor bearing mice.Keywords

The use of traditional medicine is expanding to newer horizons and plants still remain as the novel source of structurally important compounds that lead to the development of innovative drugs. India has about 45,000 plant species among which medicinal property has been attributed to several thousands. The traditional Indian system of medicine, the Ayurveda, mentions the use of plants in the treatment of various diseased conditions. Ethno botanical research done in last few decades have revealed the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of plants cited in the traditional literature. Many herbal preparations are being prescribed as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in the traditional literature. The search for new anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents from the huge array of medicinal plant resources is intensifying. This is because such plants may hold assurance for the discovery of novel therapeutic agents capable of suppressing, reducing or relieving pain as well as inflammation. This chapter reviews such plant species and their products that have shown experimental antioxidant, antiinflammatory and analgesic activities.Keywords
