Abstract

Ayurveda is the one of the most noted system of medicine in the world. The term Ayurveda in Sanskrit consist of two words: Ayur meaning life and Veda meaning science, thus Ayurveda is the science of life. Avipathi Choornam is an ayurvedic medicine and contains rhizomes of Zingiber officinale; fruits of Piper Nigrum, Piper longum, Embelia ribes, Emblica officinalis, seeds of Elettaria cardamomum and leaves of Cinnamomum zeyalanicum and it are useful for the treatment of peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. The gastroprotective activity of Avipathi Choornam was performed by the screening of antiulcer activity by ethanol induced gastric ulcer and screening of gastroprotective effect by Pylorus ligation method. The toxicity study shows the safety nature of Avipathi Choornam and the results obtained shows that it is a good and safe therapeutic agent for ulcer treatment.

Abstract

Liver diseases are the major medical problems faced by the people all over the world. About 20,000 deaths occur every year due to liver disorders Liver diseases are mainly caused by toxic chemicals, excessive intake of alcohol, infections and autoimmune disorders. Hepatotoxicity mainly implies chemical-driven liver damage. Certain drugs when taken in overdose and sometimes even when administered within therapeutic ranges may injure many organs. Some chemical agents including those that are used in laboratories (CCl₄, paracetamol) and industries (Lead, arsenic) and natural chemicals (microcystine, aflatoxins) and herbal remedies (Cascara sagrada, Ephedra) can also cause hepatotoxicity Chemicals which cause liver injury are collectively known as hepatotoxins.

So the aim of this research is to evaluate anti- oxidant and hepatoprotective activity using Desmostachya bipinnata leaf extract because very less pharmacological studies have been carried out on the leaf of Desmostachya bipinnata by emphasizing on the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity in Swiss albino rat model.

The whole plant materials are useful for the symptoms of different diseases. Desmostachya bippinata is indicated by several medicinal treatments for jaundice and other gastro intestinal disorder, Plant is a common weed plant mainly cultivated Northern parts of India.

Abstract

Wound is perhaps an inescapable event in the life of an organism. Healing process begins during the early phase of inflammation, but reaches completion usually after the injurious influence has been neutralized. It should be emphasized that without inflammation wounds would never heal. Eupatorium odoratum Linn. (Family: Compositae) is a perennial herb growing widely in the south of the country. The wound healing effect of ethanol extract of E. odoratum was studied using, re sutured incision wound, excision wound model, dead space wound model and the results obtained by the three models were compared and found that excision wound model is statistically significant (p<0.01). The anti inflammatory activity of ethanolleaf extract of E. odoratum was evaluated using carregeenan induced paw edema in rats, there was no statistically significant change in the drug treated compared to the control and the haemostatic activity assessed by capillary tube method, there was a statically significant reduction in the blood coagulation time.

Abstract

Conventional drugs available for the treatment of cancer exhibit cytotoxicity as well as mutations in normal healthy body cells. The fruit extract of Terminalia chebula has been shown to have anticarcinogenic activity along with antimicrobial activities etc. To obtain experimental evidence on the therapeutic efficacy of the fruit extract, we examined its effect on chromosomal aberration (CA) and micronucleus (MN) formation in C57BL hybrid mice, to assess the anti mutagenic activity. In MN formation test, single application of Terminalia chebula methanolic fruit extract at different doses of 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg dry weight 24 hours prior to i.p administration of cyclophosphamide (CP) at the dose of 50mg/kg significantly reduced the frequency of MNCPE and at the same time significantly increased PCE/NCE ratio compared to CP alone. Concerning CA test, fruit extract at all different doses significantly reduced the % CA and at the same time increased the % degree of protection in dose dependent manner in bone marrow cells of mice as compared to CP alone treated group. However Terminalia chebula fruit extract alone did not show any chromosomal aberration and/or micronucleus formation. These results therefore, indicate the antimutagenic activity of fruit extract. The anti mutagenic activity observed in this study can be attributed to the presence of flavonoids and polyphenols. Thus it could be a better choice to treat cancer without inducing mutations in healthy body cells.
