Abstract

Hibiscus rosasinensis (HR) is a shrub belonging to Malvaceae. The leaves of ethanolic extract of HR exhibited antidiabetic activity. Mucilage is present in leaves of HR. The objective of this research is to extract and evaluate the mucilage of HR. Leaves were collected and slurry was prepared which was precipitated using ethanol. The precipitates were separated and dried. The dried mucilage was subjected to various phytochemical and physicochemical tests. The extracted mucilage shows the presence of carbohydrates, reducing sugar and mucilage whereas glycoside, alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids and tannins was absent. The moisture sorption test reveals that the mucilage can sorbed moisture and has ability of swelling in water as shown by result of swelling index test. Other physicochemical studies indicate that the mucilage has properties to be used as excipient. FTIR spectrum shows the presence of various functional groups and bonds it possesses. It can be concluded that the mucilage can be used to prepare dosage form. However, as it can absorb moisture, the prepared dosage form should be packed suitably to avoid the contact of moisture.

Abstract

The present experimental work has been designed with an aim to develop a phytoconstitute based mucoadhesive antifungal vaginal gel for wide range of fungal infections. This topic of research has been selected addressing the clinical status of the women's health related problems. Around 75% of world women population experience acute episodes of vaginal candidasis at least once during their life time and if not treated properly may prove life threatening. All the formulations were prepared incorporating optimized concentration of curcumin and fluconazole as active constituents. Antifungal activities of Phyto-combination were screened based on In-Vitro antifungal study. Mucoadhesive polymers like Carbopol 940 and HPMC K4M were used to prepared gel base. In-vitro evaluation such as determination of pH, viscosity, spreadability, mucoadhesive study, Drug content, drug release study and In-Vivo study like RVI (rabbit vaginal irritation test) were performed to evaluate the performance of prepared formulations. Based on the result it was concluded that prepared formulations were safe, effective and overall performances were found satisfactory. Among the several preparations, F2 formulations that contain 1:4 ratios of curmumin and fluconazole shows better result.

Abstract

Antioxidant activity and phytochemical screening of hydromethanolic extracts of Aegle marmelos fruit, leaves and bark were investigated in this work. Phytochemical screening of the crude extracts revealed the presence of Alkaloids, glycosides, Terpenoids, Saponins, Tannis, Flavonoids, and Steroids. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using Fenton reaction: an in vitro assay and the extracts showed high hydroxyl radical scavenging property when compared with Ascorbic acid, which was used as reference standard. These findings demonstrated that Aegle marmelos extracts possess free radical and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity as well as antioxidant activity in vitro.

Abstract

Blumea lacera (Burm. f) D.C. (Compositae) has been used for many diseases in folk medicine. In Chhattisgarh it is known as Kukurmutta, Kukronda, or Kukkurchedi. Natives of Chhattisgarh use this plant in treatment of joint pains, fever, disease of respiratory organs, treatment of migraine, in treatment of cancerous wound etc. Chloroform soluble fraction of B. lacera methanolic extract (CSFBME) was investigated for its, potential on normal body temperature and yeast-induced pyrexia in albino rats. The CSFBME, at doses of 200, and 400 mg/kg BW p.o., showed significant reduction in normal body temperature and yeast-provoked elevated temperature in a dosedependent manner. CSFBME, at doses of 400 mg/kg caused lowering of the normal body temperature up to 3 h following administration, while in yeastinduced pyrexia the rectal temperature of 39.8°C, decreased to 38.4°C within 1 hour of treatment and reduced till 4 hours showing a sizeable decrease of 2.3°C. CSFBME illustrated lowering of body temperature in both of these models even at dose of 200mg/kg body weight. The anti-pyretic effect of CSFBME was comparable to that of paracetamol (150 mg/kg p.o.,), a standard anti-pyretic agent.

Abstract

The plants belonging to Zingiberaceae family are found to be a rich source of substances of phytochemical interest. Curcuma amada is one member of this family which is traditionally used as carminative and stomachic. The antioxidant activity of ethanol and aqueous extract of Curcuma amada rhizomes was studied. The antioxidant activity in vitro was measured by means of the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Nitric Oxide and Super oxide free radical scavenging assay. Ascorbic acid, a natural antioxidant, was used as a control. The extracts of ethanol and aqueous were strongly scavenged DPPH radical with the IC50 being 265.33 and 217.90 μg/ml respectively. While the extracts of ethanol and aqueous were moderately scavenged superoxide radical with the IC50 values of 526.87 and 440.89 μg/ml and moderately inhibited nitric oxide with the IC50 values of 386 and 510.67 μg/ml. All the parameters were found to dose dependent.
