- Report on Hemipteran Pest Diversity on Apple Plantations (Malus domestica Borkh.) in Jammu and Kashmir State of India

Twelve species belonging to different families of Hemiptera viz. Aphididae (Eriosoma lanigerum Hausmann, Aphis pomi De Geer), Reduvidae (Reduvius delicatula Distant), Dictyopharidae (Putala rostrata Melichar), Diaspididae (Quadraspidiotus perniciosus Comstock), Pentatomidae (Nezara viridula (Linnaeus), Halyomorpha halys Stal, Halys dentatus Fabricius, Scutelleridae (Chrysocoris purpureus Westwood), Fulgoridae (Borysthers sp.), Jassidae (Empoasca sp.) and Membracidae (Oxyrachis rufescens Walker) have been reported infesting apple plantations from different apple growing districts viz. Bhaderwah, Batote, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu province of Jammu Province. Their distribution, host plants, diagnostic features and damage caused by these pests to apple plantations are also discussed in the present paper.Keywords

The identification and diagnosis of insect pest can best be strengthen through an examination of the arrangement of various setae and punctures of different body segments. In the current study, the cephalic region and other body segments (thoracic, abdominal) of the last instar caterpillar of Pyrausta bambucivora Moore (Crambidae) have been examined thoroughly and contingent the occurrence of 17 tactile setae, 4 proprioceptors and 10 pores on each half of the head.Keywords

Earlier studies on identification of Galleria mellonella emphasized mainly on characterization of wing venation and maculation, larval or pupal morphology and other taxonomic characters such as male and female genitalia. The larval identification and diagnostic characters of pest species can best be strengthen through diagnosis of the setal arrangement and position of punctures present of different larval body segments. The cephalic region and all the bodily segments such as thoracic, abdominal etc of the last instar larva of Greater waxmoth, Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus) belonging to family (Pyralidae) have been examined along with some biological aspects.Keywords

Two crambid species of subfamily crambinae i.e., Chilo infuscatellus Snellen and C. auricillia Dudgeon, commonly known as sugarcane shoot borer and stalk borer respectively, whose eggs were analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for studying their morphological features present on the egg chorion. This chorionic sculpture can be used by a taxonomist for precise identification of taxa along with other taxonomic characters. The egg surface shows structural elements such as micropylar rosette, ribs, cross-ribs, and aeropyles which differ significantly amid the higher taxonomic groups. In the species i.e., C. infuscatellus Snellen, the egg chorion has somewhat smooth with weak ornamentation in comparison to irregular reticulation present with both alternating and longitudinal ridges reaches the micropyle in C. auricillia DudgeonKeywords

The present communication represents updated list of 126 species of butterflies under 85 genera belonging to 06 families from the Indian Sundarbans. During present survey, 30 species have been recorded, of which, a butterfly species, Discophora sondaica Boisduval, 1836 (Family Nymphalidae) has been reported for the first time from the mangrove ecosystem of this region. The family Lycaenidae represents 38 species followed by families Nymphalidae, Hesperiidae, Pieridae, Papilionidae and Riodinidae with 37 species, 26 species, 14 species, 10 species and 01 species respectively.Keywords

Survey tours were undertaken for the collection of Pterophorid moths from various localities falling in the jurisdiction of North-Western Shiwaliks. In all, 26 species belonged to 18 genera of the family Pterophoridae(25 species of subfamily Pterophorinae and 01 Deuterocopinae) were examined and identified. The keys to subfamilies, synonymy, distribution and remarks for all the species are also provided in detail.Keywords
