Abstract

A puffer fish, Lagocephalus guentheri Miranda Riberio, 1915, is recorded for the first time from the west coast of India. Three individuals were collected from three different states, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Kerala, with other materials. Brief notes on diagnostic characters of the species and distinction between all species of the genus Lagocephalus in form of a working key to species is presented in this paper.

Abstract

The present paper reports the occurrence of Gerres infasciatus (Perciformes: Gerreidae), the third species in the “G. filamentosus” complex, for the first time from coastal waters of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal states of India, Bay of Bengal. From India, this species was earlier known only from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Their relationship within the complex is also discussed for correct identification.

Abstract

A moray eel, Gymnothorax pseudotile Mohapatra et al., 2017, is recorded for the first time from the Sundarbans. Only one individual was collected from fishermen along with other materials. Brief notes on diagnostic characters, habitat ecology and behaviour as observed are presented in this paper.

Abstract

Two specimens belonging to species i.e., Thryssa stenosoma Wongratana have been collected from Balugaon fish landing centre of Chilika lagoon, Odisha for the first time. A systematic account of the species and comparison of the same with all other species of the genus is provided. Distribution of Thryssa species along coastal waters of India is also presented.

Abstract

The Peter's toby, Canthigaster petersii (Bianconi, 1854) (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae: Canthigasterinae), is being reported herewith for the first time from mainland coast of India, based on one specimen from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Distribution of different species of Canthigaster in Indian waters is discussed pointing erroneous record of Canthigaster margaritata (Ruppell) and C. solandri (Richardson), which are most likely based on specimens of C. petersii (Bianconi).
