Abstract

This paper intends to assess the forest growth and land utilization pattern in the arid region of Rajasthan over the period 1960-1961 to 1997-1998. Rajasthan has around 7.44 per cent (1997-98) of the total geographical area under forest but in the arid region of the State only 2.0 per cent area (4,174 km², 1997-1998) comes under forest. Based on the agroclimate the arid region of Rajastban has been classified into four zones viz. Arid Western Plain (Zone-IA), Irrigated North Western Plain (Zone-IB), Transitional Plain of Inland Drainage (Zone-IIA) and Transitional Plain of Luni Basin (Zone-IIB). The data on the land use pattern and forest area indicate that in the past 37 years arid region recorded an increase in area under forest as well as that under non agricultural uses and net area sown, whereas that under barren land, old fallow, and culturable waste declined considerably. The forest area increased from 0.81 % in 1960-1961 to 2.01 % in 1997-1998 recording an ACGR of 3.66 % as compared to the State as a whole (3.04 %). After witnessing an insignificant ACGR of the forest area in the 1960s, the arid region withessed the highest ACGR of 7.47 % in the 1970s. Similar trend was also observed for the different zones and the State. The human as well as livestock population density of the region has increased from 37 (1961) to 84 (1991) and 66 (1961) to 132 (1997), respectively. Considering the increasing biotic pressure on the land in arid Rajasthan and the trend of more intensive land cultivation on larger area there is need to accelerate the growth afforest in this region so that the natural base here could be improved to sustain the vital life support systems and also to help in bringing about favourable changes in the harsh climate of the region.

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to theoretically investigate the combined effect of chemical reaction and radiation on heat and mass transfer of a general unsteady hydromagnetic, free convective flow of viscoelastic fluid (Walter’s B-model) through a vertical channel. The temperature and the concentration at one plate of the channel is assumed to be oscillating with time. The uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the planes of the plates. The solution of the governing equation for the velocity, the temperature and the concentration fields are obtained in close form. The significant effects of various parameters entering into the problem, on the velocity, the temperature, the concentration, the skin friction, the rate of heat and mass transfer have been evaluated numerically and expressed graphically. The phase angles of the skin friction; the heat transfer and the mass transfer have been tabulated and discussed.

Abstract

Heat transfer in hydromagnetic flow of electrically conducting, viscous, incompressible fluid through a circular pipe of uniform width filled with porous material under the influence of periodically varying pressure gradient and wall slip condition is investigated. The governing equation is solved by using the Bessel function. The solution for the velocity and the temperature profiles are obtained and evaluated numerically. The results have been expressed graphically to bring out the effects of various parameters enter in the governing equation.

Abstract

The unsteady two-dimensional convective flow of a viscous incompressible, electrically conducting, viscoelastic fluid (Rivlin-Ericksen Model) through porous medium bounded between two inclined porous plates with time dependent injection and same suction velocity has been investigated. At the first plate where injection and same suction velocity has been investigated. At the first plate where injection is taking place is assumed to have a slip property while the other plate is moving with a constant velocity. A first order chemical reaction is considered. Magnetic field is applied transversely to the channel, and assumed so strong that the induced magnetic field is negligibly small. The inclination of channel with direction of gravity is assumed to be between 0 and 90 (acute angle). The effects of a number of non-dimensional parameters namely; Prandtl number (P_r), Grashof number (G_r), modified Grashof number (G_c), frequency of oscillation (ω), viscoelastic parameter (R_c), Soret number (S₀) and heat absorption coefficient (Q₀) entering into the problem on the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are stud- ied in detail. Solution of the present problem is found analytically by the method of perturbation technique. Pertinent results regarding the effect of above said non-dimensional numbers for velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are concluded from graphs and tables. Scientific software and Origin software are used for numerical calculations and plot of graphs respectively. The contribution of the temperature gradient to the flux of matter (Soret effect), the effect of angle of inclination of channel and effect of g-jitter are the leading phenomenon.

Abstract

Unsteady free convective flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in a porous medium past an infinite vertical rotating porous plate with gravity modulation is considered. Expressions for velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are obtained. Also the expressions for the skin-friction coefficient, rate of heat transfer and Sherwood number are derived. The effects of Prandtl number (Pr), Grashof number (Gr), modified Grashof number (Gc), frequency of oscillation (ω), Rotation parameter (E), gravity modulation parameter(α), Heat radiation (􀀁R_p􀀂) and Permeability parameter (k₀􀀄􀀅) are studied through graphs. It is found that primary fluid velocity decreases with increase of rotation parameter whereas secondary fluid velocity is increased. It has been noticed that with increase of gravity modulation parameter primary velocity increases. With increase of radiation parameter the temperature decreases. Concentration decreases with increase of Chemical reaction parameter.

Abstract

An analysis of an unsteady free convective flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting fluid past an infinite hot vertical porous plate in slip flow regime has been carried out under the following assumptions: (i)the suction velocity normal to the plate is constant, (ii) the plate temperature is spanwise cosinusoidal fluctuating with time, (iii) the difference between the temperature of the plate and the free stream is moderately large causing free convection currents and (iv) the transversely applied magnetic field and magnetic Reynold number are really small and, hence, the induced magnetic field is negligible. The governing equations have been solved by adopting complex variable notations and the expressions for velocity and temperature fields obtained. The transient velocity, temperature, and amplitude the shear stress and heat transfer at the plate have been discussed.

Abstract

The present study deals with the effects of heat and mass transfer on MHD free convective flow of an incompressible and electrically-conducting fluid along an infinite vertical moving plate embedded in the porous medium by taking into account the effect of viscous dissipation. A uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plane of the plate. The dimensionless governing equations are solved analytically using two-term harmonic and non-harmonic functions. The numerical calculations are performed to illustrate the influence of parameters used in the problem on the velocity, temperature and concentration. The graphical representations of the numerical results reveal that increased cooling of the plate and the Eckert number leads to a rise in the velocity profile. Also, an increase in Prandtl number leads to decrease in the temperature.

Abstract

In the present study the effects of thermal radiation, heat source and magnetic Prandtl number on heat and mass transfer in mixed convection MHD flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting fluid over a vertical porous plate taking into account the induced magnetic field has been analyzed. The plate is subjected to a constant suction velocity. The expression for the velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction and induced magnetic, coefficient of rate of heat and mass transfer in term of Nusselt number and Sherwood number at the plate are obtained in non-dimensional form. Numerical value of velocity, temperature, skin friction and induced magnetic field for different value of the parameters involved in the problem are expressed through the graphs and table. The results are discussed in detail.

Abstract

The objective of present study is to investigate the effects of thermal radiation and magnetic Prandtl number on heat and mass transfer in mixed convection MHD flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting optically thin gray fluid over a vertical porous plate taking into account the induced magnetic field. The plate is subjected to a constant suction velocity. Numerical value of velocity, temperature, skin friction and induced magnetic field for different value of the parameters involved in the problem are expressed through the graphs and table. The results are discussed in detail.

Abstract

An unsteady flow of dusty viscoelastic (Walter's liquid model-B) fluid past an impulsively started vertical plate through porous medium with heat source/sink in the presence of chemical reaction and thermo diffusion (Soret effect) is investigated. The constitutive equations, which are partial differential equations, are converted into ordinary differential equations and then the expressions for velocity, temperature and concentration profile are obtained. The numerical calculations are performed to point up the influence of pertinent flow parameters on velocity, temperature and concentration profile. Some important characteristics of flow field such as non-dimensional skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also studied.

Abstract

The aim of this present paper is to study free convective unsteady flow of a viscous incompressible, rotating fluid in a porous medium past an infinite vertical plate with gravity modulation to the flow region. Expressions for velocity, temperature and concentration distribution are obtained by using perturbation technique. Also the expressions for the skinfriction coefficient, rate of heat transfer and Sherwood number are derived. The effects of Prandtl number (Pr), Grashof number (Gr), modified Grashof number (Gc), frequency of oscillation(ω), Rotation parameter (E), gravity modulation parameter(α ) and Permeability parameter (K_0) are studied through graphs. It is found that primary velocity of fluid decreases with increase of rotation parameter whereas secondary velocity is increased near to the wall. And with increase of Prandtl number velocity as well as temperature decreases. Concentration decreases with increase of Schmidt number.

Abstract

The paper investigate the effect of heat and mass transfer in radiating and chemically reacting MHD oscillatory flow of viscoelastic fluid [Walter liquid model B] in a vertical channel with slip condition on one plate of the channel. The uniform magnetic field B_o is applied perpendicular to the planes of the plates. A closed form solutions of the equations governing the flow are obtained for the velocity, temperature and concentration profile. The velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles as well as skin friction coefficient and mass transfer rate are evaluated numerically and presented graphically for different value of flow parameters.

Abstract

An investigation of heat and mass transfer effect on incompressible chemically reacting, radiating and electrical conducting viscoelastic fluid through porous medium in porous vertical channel has been carried out. The magnetohydro dynamics (MHD) flow is assumed to be laminar and fully developed. A uniform magnetic field is applied in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the plates. The equations governing the flow are solved by perturbation technique. The velocity, temperature, concentration fields, coefficient of skin friction, rate of heat and mass transfer are evaluated numerically and discussed with the help of graphs and tables.

Abstract

An analysis of unsteady convective flow of viscous stratified fluid through porous medium past an infinite vertical porous plate in presence of heat source under the influence of magnetic field applied normal to the plane of the plate has been presented. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using Laplace transform technique. The solution are expressed in terms of exponential and complimentary error function. The effects of various parameters on velocity and temperature field are depicted graphically, whereas skin friction and rate of heat transfer are presented in tabular form and discussed.

Abstract

The present study analyses the effects of Hall current and heat absorption on a viscous, incompressible, optically thick and electrically conducting viscoelastic fluid flow past an infinite vertical porous plate through porous medium in rotating system with variable suction, thermal radiation and chemical reaction in the presence of uniform magnetic field. The perturbation technique is employed to solve the governing nonlinear partial differential equations to obtain the expressions for velocity, temperature and concentration profile. With the help of graphs and tables, the effects of pertinent flow parameters on the velocity, temperature and concentration fields, shear stress, Nusselt number and Sherwood number within the boundary layer are discussed. The results reveal that the observed parameters in rotating system have a noteworthy influence on the ow, heat and mass transfer.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to identify two-wheeler drivers’ risk taking attitude towards road accident. The data of the study has been obtained through self-administrated questionnaire with a sample of 105 two-wheeler drivers from Panipat (Haryana). 22 items have been comprised into four factors that define two-wheeler drivers’ risk taking attitude. Descriptive research design has been used in the study with the purpose of describing drivers’ risk taking attitude towards road accidents. The study has observed that there is significant difference between male and female two-wheeler drivers’ risk taking attitude regarding all the factors such as enforcement of law, non-driving activities, traffic rules and carelessness and significant difference is also observed between two-wheeler drivers who got the driving training and did not get the driving training regarding all the factors of risk taking attitude excluding traffic rules. There is insignificant difference between two-wheeler drivers’ risk taking attitude that having the driving license and do not having the driving license regarding all the factors of risk taking attitude except carelessness.
