Herbal medicines are analysed for heavy metals. They are found to have higher concentration of one or more elements. Therefore, the need for limit tests of heavy metals arises for herbal medicines. There is also a need for heavymetal analysis to be an integral part of the standardization of herbalmedicines. Artocarpus lakoocha (Roxb.) is a perennial tree found in west coast from Kokan southwards to Kerala and in Tamil Nadu. It has many pharmacological activities such as antiviral, anticancer and anti HIV. Six common heavy metals Fe, Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Pb were analysed by Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, which uses the technique of Inductively Coupled Plasma. ICP-AES is one of the analytical techniques used to determine the concentration of certain metallic ions in solution by measuring the intensity of emission of light at a particular wavelength when a solution of the substance being examined is introduced into a flame.Keywords

Many mineral elements occur in animal and plant tissues in very minute quantities, which earlier were unable to be measured precisely by analytical methods then available. Modern analytical technique like inductively coupled plasma has the ability to measure almost all the trace elements in smallest of biological samples with great precision and accuracy. There is also a need for heavy metal analysis to be an integral part of the standardization of herbal medicine. Bauhinia variegata has been used against various ailments of which leucoderma, leprosy and asthma are few to name. Five common heavy metals As, Cr, Mg ,Pb and Zn were analysed by inductively coupled plasma in whole plant powder of Bauhinia variegata, and magnesium was found to have the highest concentration.Keywords

There is also a need for heavy metal analysis to be an integral part of the standardization of herbal medicines. Mallotus philippensis is a plant distributed nearly throughout India. Mallotus philippensis, used for present study, has many pharmacological activities of which antibacterial, immunoregulatory, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activity are important. Leucas aspera is a herb with white colour flowers, largely occurring in plains.It has been used against various ailments of which anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activities and diabetes are few to name. Five common heavy metals Fe, Zn, Cr, Cu and Pb were analysed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Among the five metals analyzed in whole plant powder of Leucas aspera, Fe showed higher concentration while others were within the normal range.Full Text
