Abstract

Trees remove atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis, that stores a tremendous amount of carbon in their structures. They act as a major CO₂ sink which captures carbon from the atmosphere and stores it in the form of fixed biomass. Therefore, growing trees in the urban areas having a potential role regarding the accumulation of atmospheric CO₂ in the form of biomass. Thus, the present investigation was carried out to calculate the carbon sequestration of 38 standing tree species in Shivaji University campus. The biomass and total organic carbon of standing trees is estimated by the non destructive method. The population of Gliricidia maculate is more in the university campus but it sequestrates the carbon in very less amount (0.329 tones/year) while the Ficus racemosa species sequestrated more carbon (65.367 tones/year).

Abstract

The present investigation was undertaken to study the impact of anthropogenic activities such as Ganesh idol immersion and mattresses washing during the Navaratra festival on the phytoplankton diversity of Rajaram reservoir. The total number of phytoplankton recorded during this investigation is 120. Several of these algal species belong to the pollution tolerant genera. A few biological and diversity indices were also calculated, which indicate high level of pollution of the Rajaram reservoir. Therefore, it is an urgent need to conserve this reservoir for the future water resource.

Abstract

In order to quantify the effect of religious activity in water pollution, an ex situ study for Ganesh idol immersion has been carried out and dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) were evaluated. The results showed an adverse impact on the water quality of the micro-environment of the idol immersion. The present investigation highlights the importance of analysis of the samples from water columns in the microenvironment of the idols after immersion and not the surface waters where the echelon of the effect gets diluted.
