Considering the impacts of industrial effluents on the water quality of many ponds, reservoirs, lakes and rivers as reported in the literature, the present study of water quality of a polluted pond was undertaken. Several physico-chemical parameters of the polluted pond namely Suman Lal Ka Pokhara were analysed to evaluate its suitability for washing, pisciculture and irrigation purposes by determining parameters like water temperature, pH, conductivity, DO, alkalinity, total hardness, BOD, nutrients, etc. Water was found acidic. Contents of chloride and TDS were not within the limits accepted for irrigation. Other parameters also suggested that the pond is not fit for other purposes also.Keywords

Pesticides are much overused in the environment despite the fact that they are toxic and hazardous to our health and environment. Enough studies have been done to prove that the use of pesticides is futile and probably does more harm than good in the long run. To know the impact of pesticides in the present investigation, male and female Clarias batrachus fish, which are air breathing in nature, were exposed to different test concentrations (2 ppm, 4 ppm, 6 ppm, 8 ppm) of an organophosphorus pesticide, parathion. Increase in the level of blood urea whereas gradual fall in the plasma protein were observed in all the test concentrations of parathion. Parathion toxicity showed an increase in the level of blood glucose upto 6 ppm and thereafter significant fall in its level at 8 ppm. There was a significant rise of blood cholesterol level in initial dose of the pesticide and significant fall in 6 ppm and 8 ppm. Gradual fall in the protein level and increased values of urea might be due to hyperactivity of adrenocorticoides and impaired functions of the kidney of the fish respectively. The rise in the level of blood glucose from control condition upto 6 ppm might be due to secretion of glucagon hormone under stress condition. A significant fall in the blood glucose level at 8 ppm might be attributed to the utilization of glucose by the tissues of extremely active fish at higher dose of the pesticide. A significant rise in the serum cholesterol at lower concentration of parathion is attributed to the stimulation of adrenal gland whereas at higher level, the rise in the blood cholesterol value might be due to increased breakdown of fats into cholesterol and free fatty acids in the fish.Keywords

The present investigation deals with the toxic effect of a common insecticide parathion on total and differential count of an air-breathing fish Clarias batrachus. In four different concentrations (2 ppm, 4 ppm, 6 ppm and 8 ppm, of parathion for 96 hrs to Clarias batrachus, a gradual and significant increase in total leucocytes with parathion concentrations was observed. Total percentage of lymphocytes showed marked increase in all the test animals exposed to different concentrations of the toxicant. Significant decrease in neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils and monocytes were also observed in parathion exposed animals.Keywords

This study assessed the effect of fenvalerate pesticide on the kidney condition Renatosomatic Index (RSI) of a freshwater fish Clarias batrachus. Fenvalerate is a pyrethroid pesticide. The RSI showed decreasing trend when the fishes were exposed to different sub lethal concentrations i. e., 0.02 ppm, 0.04 ppm and 0.08 ppm of fenvalerate for 96 hours. This condition of kidney of the fish can result from incomplete elimination of the fenvalerate from the kidney, thereby affecting the normal metabolism of the fish. Thus, the pyrethroid pesticide such as fenvalerate should be used with caution in agriculture field applications, as it is likely to introduce acute levels of the toxicant into the environment.Keywords
