In the present work, a methodology based on multi-attribute utility technology (MAUT) is suggested for evaluation of alternative flexible manufacturing systems. A ‘flexible manufacturing system selection index’ is proposed that evaluates and ranks flexible manufacturing systems for a given industrial application. This paper presents a logical procedure to evaluate machinability of work materials for a given machining operation. The procedure is based on graph theory and on an analytic hierarchy process method. The proposed machinability index helps to evaluate and rank the work materials for a given machining operation.
