Abstract

In the present work, the effect of heat input on weldability of austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304) in pulsed current GMAW has been investigated. The weldability has been investigated in terms of tensile properties (Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), Yield Strength (YS), and % elongation). Further results have been verified by SEM analysis and porosity content. The welding parameters were adjusted to achieve a weld bead contour corresponding to DIN 8563 class AS at different heat inputs.

Abstract

In this paper, the effects of heat input on weld characteristics in pulse gas metal arc welding (P-GMAW) of austenitic stainless steel is presented. The weld characteristics are Front Width (bi), Front Height (a1), Back Width (b2), Back Height (a2), Top Reinforcement Area (A1), Root Reinforcement Area (A3), Base Metal Fusion Area (A2), Weld Metal and Dilution D (%). AISI 304 stainless steel sheets of 2mm thickness in flat position were welded with pulse gas metal arc welding process to achieve a weld bead contour corresponding to DIN 8563 class AS at different heat inputs for investigating the effects of heat input on weld characteristics. The heat input varies by changing the input parameters such as mean current (I_m), welding speed (S), peak current (I_p), base current (I_b), pulse time (t_p), frequency (f). These pulse parameters have distinct effect on the welding characteristics.
