Abstract

The necessity of meeting the demand for high strength and refractory materials with the development of high technology has resulted in the development of newer manufacturing processes like laser machining. CO₂ laser is a four level gas laser which uses a mixture of CO₂, N₂ and He to realize the lasing action. This paper deals with the application of CO₂ laser in cutting steel and acrylic. The cut surface studies, material removal rate, profile accuracy and material characteristics are highlighted in this paper. The interaction of laser with the cut surface is found to be dependent not only on speed of cutting and laser power but also on the material properties.

Abstract

In this paper an artificial neural network model has been developed to analyse the wire erosion rate, the ratio of material removal rate to wire wear rate in wire-EDM process. Experiments were conducted by machining Mild steel, OHN steel and HCHCr steel using bare brass wire and zinc coated brass wire as tool materials. SEM and EDAX results are analysed to study the wire erosion rate in EDM process. The predicted ANN values are in agreement with experimental results and are helpful in the study of the EDM process.
