- Turning of Inconel 718 with Multilayer CVD Coated Carbide Tools

The present work is an attempt to determine optimum machining parameters for turning of Inconel 718 in dry conditions with multiplayer CVD coated carbide tool (TiN/Al2O3/TiCN). The turning of Inconel 718 is performed on precision, heavy duty, and robust NH-22 Lathe. Investigation of machining parameters involved experimenting with different feed rates (0.04-1.04 mm/rev), different depth of cuts (0.2-1.15 mm), and different cutting speeds (1.91-93.73 m/min) while turning.
From the experimentations, it can be stated that the optimum machining parameters; Cutting speed=40.17 m/min, feed=0.1 mm/rev, and depth of cut=0.5 mm are best suited for semi-finish turning of Inconel 718 with CVD coated multi layer carbide tool based upon tool life.

The Aerospace industry's advancements have resulted in an increase in demand and production optimization of super alloys. These superalloys, such as Inconel 718, are generally characterized by very high strain hardening coefficients and as a result they are extremely difficult to machine. Inconel 718, a heat resistant super alloy (HRSA), is utilized in the hottest parts of a gas turbine able to withstand high operating temperatures typically between 540°C and 1000°C.
