Property Analysis of Cryogenically Treated Aluminium Hybrid Composites Fabricated by Powder Metallurgy

Particles reinforced aluminum alloys are interesting materials for technological applications because they exhibit higher stiffness, hardness, wear resistance and lower thermal expansion. Also, hybrid metal matrix composites with different reinforcements are now being considered as a vital class of high-performance materials for structural and nonstructural applications. In this paper, an attempt has been made to produce aluminum hybrid composites by powder metallurgy with silicon carbide (SiC) and flyash as the dispersoids. The hardness, wear resistance, tensile and compressive properties of the specimens were analyzed by varying the percentage of SiC alone when flyash was maintained a constant. The Influence of cryogenic treatment on all the above said properties was also Investigated. Increasing the % volume fraction showed greater wear resistance, hardness, improved tensile strength and reduced compressive strength. Cryogenically treated specimens exhibit higher strength, hardness and compression properties.
