Cutting Tool Wear Determination by Measuring Tool Shank Deformation

It is well known that cutting forces are changing with the tool wear. But the changes are not linear and it is very difficult to use a selected force for effective monitoring. Therefore the ratio of forces could be possible to give necessary information. For the forces measurement it is necessary to use dynamometer and this one is undesirable for use in shop floor. Therefore it was used for measuring the ratio of deformation created by cutting forces on the body of the tool shank. Outcomes of the research shown in the presented contribution give optimistic results.
