General Tribological Evaluation of Deep Drawing Oils

Performance based rating of mineral based oils used for deep drawing operation assume a lot of significance. The synergistic effect of different concentrations of sulfur and ester in base oil was evaluated for extreme pressure and anit-wear following ASTM D2783 and ASTM D4172 standards. A total of six lubricating blends were formulated and compared their performance with base oil. Tests were conducted on DUCOM TR-30L four ball tester and wear scar diameter were measured on optical microscope. Compatibility of additives has been discussed on the basis of various parameters like wear scar diameter (WSD), weld load (WL), and load wear index (LWI) which could act as indicators for performance rating.
