Abstract
Email is the communications and data backbone of all organizations large and small, private or public sector. Email is an organization's single most important repository of corporate memory. Email underpins communication, collaboration and decision making. It carries ideas, insights and knowledge. It stores and exchanges contracts, orders and business commitments. It is the common tool used by everyone to work together, and with customers and partners.Managing, storing and protecting email (and the valuable data it contains) is a critical consideration for IT teams and a significant proportion of IT budget is spent here. But this is also a concern and responsibility of the risk, legal, security and executive teams in organizations too, as it is for regulators, law makers and customers.Email sits on mailbox servers managed by IT teams or by a cloud provider who might host it for a customer. Beyond the mailbox itself there are other critical technologies and services needed to manage, store and protect email and the data. This is where the company that has been studied as a part of this case study, Mimecast, comes in. Mimecast built and developed a secure cloud platform with services that enable organizations to protect their corporate email and data, and move it from their own on-premises IT infrastructure safely to the cloud.
