Oxidation of dl-tartaric acid by Cr(VI) in aqueous acid medium shows complex kinetics and follows the rate law.V = k1[Tartaric acid] [H+] + k2 [Tartaric acid] [H+]2 + k3 [Tartaric acid]2 both in absence and presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate. The rate maximum observed in presence of varying [SDS] has been rationalised by Berezin's model conforming to partition of both the reactants between the aqueous and the micellar phases. The substrate, i.e., dl-tartaric acid appears to be bound by hydrophobic effect to the micellar phase while a hydrophilic binding is responsible for binding of Cr(VI) species.
