All available information on the Internet is accessible to users with valid internet connection at all times. Voluminous information is available on the internet to meet specific purposes. Information from primary, secondary and tertiary sources are also available. The information is available in various forms and formats. The most preferred format of information retrieval is PDF apart from it other available forms are DOC, JPEG, PPT etc. The information on internet can be remotely accessed and retrieved by directly browsing the concerned website or through various repositories or libraries. It is very difficult for a person to remember addresses of a range of websites at an instance. This work is an attempt to categories forestry into various sections and to consolidate the websites available in each section. The informative sites are further systematized. This appraisal gives an analysis of some forestry web resources. An extended list of web links is given in Tabular form. The paper summarizes selected forests and forestry related internet information resources.

Abstract

Maturity has important implications in harvesting fruits at proper stage so as to have developed proper marketing as well as quality attributes. Immature fruits are more prone to shrivelling and mechanical damage and develop inferior flavour when ripe. Overripe fruits tend to become soft with more susceptible to postharvest physiological disorders than fruits picked at the proper maturity. Thus, for all kinds of fruits, harvest maturity is important Different fruits manifest different signals at the time of maturity. A phasic variation is noted in shape, size, colour, flavour, TSS, acidity, ascorbic acid, polyphenol, tannin, enzyme activity, nutrient composituion, etc. as the fruit approaches harvest maturity Of course, growers perception works well in judging maturity. Actually, a fruit is considered worth harvesting when it attains proper stage of maturity in terms of physical and biochemical parameth quality.

History of the nomenclatural complications in the genus Capillipedium Stapf has been reviewed. Reasons for name changes in certain species have been discussed. Mt. Abu on south-western end of the Aravallis is the highest hill (alt. 1,722 m.) in Rajasthan. It is the solitary spot of this altitude in the wide gap between the Himalayas and the hill ranges of Deccan, the Western Ghats. The flora, therefore, is of great phytogeographical significance. The geology and climate of the place has been briefly described. A review of previous botanical work on this area has been given. A list of 469 species is given in the paper. It is based on previous reports and authors collections from the area during 1956-1960. 67 species have been reported from Mt. Abu for the first time.

Abstract

In present paper it has been strived to deal all nutraceutical attributes of 'aonla' rendering it suitable for processing besides delineating scope for development of beverages there from. 'Aonla' had been under use for preparation of conventional processed products such as preserve, 'chyavanprash', candy, dehydrated shreds, pickle, etc. Being rich source of vitamin C and poly phenols, aonla has strong antioxidant activity and therefore getting popular in recent years as nutraceutical food. But the harsh processing treatments involved may sometimes cause significant loss in its nutritive and pharmacological properties. Hence, alternatively aonla is put to use in the development of juice and beverages. Since it is highly acidic and astringent in taste it has to be mixed with other fruit juices such as lime, ginger, etc. for preparation of RTS, squash and syrups. Similarly, aonla juice could be utilized to mix with other fruit juices for development of vitamin C rich fruit juice based beverages.

Abstract

Thermal energy storage is one of the most efficient ways to store solar energy for heating air by energy collected from sun. An indirect forced convection solar drier with thermal storage has been developed and tested its performance for drying ginger under the metrological conditions of Udaipur, India. Agricultural food materials can be dried at late evening, while late evening drying was not possible with a normal solar dryer. So that, solar dryer with storage unit is very beneficial for the humans and as well as for the energy conservation. The system consisted of a flat plate solar air collector, heat storage unit, a drying chamber and a DC fan. Drying experiments have been performed at an air flow rate of 0.0025 kg/s. Drying of ginger rhizomes in a forced convection solar drier reduces the moisture content from around 84 per cent (wet basis) to the final moisture content about 9.63 per cent in 36 h. Average drier efficiency was estimated to be about 30 per cent.

Abstract

The preliminary experiment for mass transport data of button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) were performed for fixing the levels of input variables for further experimentation such as kinetics and optimization of osmotic dehydration as well as air drying. After the preparatory steps, the preliminary experiment was studied for wide range of process variables such as duration of osmosis (30, 45, 60, 90, 120 min), salt concentration (5, 10, 15, 20, 25%), brine temperature (25, 35, 45, 55, 65°C) and brine to sample ratio (3:1, 4:1, 5:1, 6:1, 8:1 R). The response parameters were mainly water loss and salt gain.

Abstract

The effect of different drying conditions on total drying time, ascorbic acid content, colour and water activity of osmo-dehydrated button mushroom slices were investigated at 45, 55, 65, 75 and 850C drying temperature and 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 m/s air velocities. The retention of ascorbic acid was found to be increased with decrease in drying temperature from 85 to 650C and it decreased with further decrease in drying air temperature to 450C. Similarly, with respect to individual effect of velocity, the sample dried with lower velocity (1.0 m/s) recorded highest ascorbic acid (27.24 mg/100 g dm). As the temperature increased, L-value of colour was increased from 450C to 650C, means sample became lighter in colour and thereafter decreased at 750C. The sample dried with 2.0 m/s drying air velocity was found significantly superior with better colour (49.91). Sample with lowest water activity (0.228) was one dried at 850C drying temperature and 2.0 m/s drying air velocity and was significantly superior over the sample dried by all other combinations of temperature and velocity.

Abstract

The cooling efficiency of the evaporative cooling chamber was found to be 65.41%, 56.14% and 89.94% for month of September, October and November, respectively. The average yellowness index before and after storage of okra was 33.97 and 44.95, respectively and for snake gourd before and after storage was 40.46 and 32.17, respectively. The hardness of okra before storage was 1060g and after storage was 811.6g. The hardness for snake gourd before storage and after storage was 1626.6g and 838.3g respectively. Shelf life was increased by four days and six days of okra and snake gourd, respectively in evaporative cooling chamber as compared to ambient environment.

Abstract

A 200 litre oil drum was developed and fabricated for production of bamboo vinegar. Bamboos were cut in 15 cm length and further splitted vertically. The average moisture content of air dried bamboo splits was found to be 22.77 per cent. The bamboo splits were carbonized in oil drum kiln and smoke was condensed to collect bamboo vinegar. It was observed that from 16 bamboos, the output of bamboo vinegar 2.24 litre and bamboo charcoal 22.3 kg was obtained. The average bulk density of bamboo charcoal was found to be 181.23 kg/m3. The ash content of bamboo charcoal and raw bamboo were found to be 4.28 per cent and 7.88 per cent, respectively.

Abstract

In the hot and humid climate of Konkan region issue of cow comfort is ignored and hence has serious implications for barn profitability. Twelve cows were selected for study of comfort on concrete floor and rubber mat floor. The average lying down time of cows was increased on rubber mat floor from 2.00 to 4.28 h. The time required to sit and to stand the cow on rubber mat floor was less as compared to concrete floor. The average maximum number of slippage on concrete floor was observed 4.9 and on the rubber mat floor was 4.0. The average minimum number of slippage on concrete floor was 4.4 and on the rubber mat floor was 2.6. The milk production was increased by 30.4 per cent when cows were housed on rubber mat floor as compare to concrete floor due to increase in comfort.

Cashew (Anacardium Occidentale L.) is one of the important tropical crops having high export potential due to high market value of kernels. In the study "Vegurla-4" variety of cashewnut was processed by direct steam roasting method for studying maximum per cent whole kernel recovery, drying behaviour of kernels and sensory properties of cashew kernel. The treatments were combinations of steam pressure viz., 10, 15 and 20 psi and time of steaming viz., 10, 15 and 20 min. Statistical R. B. D. analysis revealed that the treatment 20 psi with 10 min. gave maximum 90.08 per cent whole kernels. The pressure factor was significant while time factor was found to be non-significant in 32 factorial designs. The mathematical model developed gave the optimum pressure 18.76 psi for maximum shelling percentage. The treatment consisting of 15 psi and 15 min gave better result during drying study with lowest equilibrium moisture content and highest drying constant. The sensory study revealed that among treatments colour and texture varied significantly. Overall, treatment with steam pressure 20 psi and steaming time 15 min. was found to be most suitable.

Abstract

An investigation involving blending of aonla and Kinnow mandarin juice in various proportions for their value addition by preparation of RTS beverage was carried out in the post- graduate laboratory of Department of Post Harvest Technology, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Jhalrapatan, (Rajasthan) during 2011-12. The aonla and Kinnow mandarin juice was blended in various proportions viz., 0:100, 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60 and 50:50 to prepare ready-to-serve (RTS) beverages having 10 per cent juice, 12 per cent TSS and 0.3 per cent acidity. The treatment involving blending of aonla juice with Kinnow mandarin juice in 40:60 proportion was found most suitable since it had maximum sensory qualities in terms of highest overall acceptance score (6.74/9.00) with bright yellow colour, pleasant aroma and taste. It also had second best ascorbic acid (27.92 mg/ 100 ml) and total phenol content (1.18 %).

Abstract

Coconut husk, areca nut husk, rice husk, saw dust and there combinations were used for experiment. The average moisture content were 12.09 per cent, 14.65 per cent, 15.09 per cent and 14.86 per cent for coconut husk, areca nut husk, rice husk, and saw dust, respectively. The average bulk density was 76.32 kg/m³, 81.98 kg/m³, 109.66 kg/m³ and 199.84 kg/m³ for coconut husk, areca nut husk, rice husk and saw dust, respectively. The average residue collected were obtained as 12.64 per cent, 10.77 per cent, 11.69 per cent, 48.18 per cent, and 38.43 per cent for T₁, T₂, T₃, T₄, and T₅, respectively. Biomass was analyzed for temperature and burn in developed burning chamber. The combustion study was carried in burning chamber. 1kg sample, it was observed that the temperature increases from 29.16 to 167.66 °C, 29.46 to 155 °C, 29.53 to 146.3 °C and 30.4 to 143.13 °C for T₂, T₃, T₄ and T₅, respectively during 20 min of durations. 2 kg sample, it was observed that the temperature increases from 28.8 to 180.96 °C, 29 to 165.36 °C and 28.5 to 146.43 °C for T₂, T₃, and T₄ respectively during 20 min of durations. But in case of T₁ and T₂ temperature increases from 29.26 to 232.56 °C and 30.06 to 152.73 °C during 0 to 15 minute of duration, respectively . For combustion of 3 kg sample, it was observed that the temperature increases from 29.5 to 248.96 °C, 29.96 to 227.46 °C, 29.6 to 174.13 °C and 30.73 to 165.8 °C for T₂, T₃, T₄ and T₅, respectively during 20 min of duration. But in case of T₁ temperature increases from 29.8 to 304.5 °C during 0 to 15 minute. The results indicated that coconut husk and areca nut husk were good for combustion in developed burning chamber. Burning of sawdust and rice husk and there combinations were not suitable for burning in developed burning chamber.

Abstract

The average moisture content of fresh bamboo (cv. Dendrocalamus stocksii) after harvesting was found to be 58.33 per cent. The shrinkage of bamboo along diameter, thickness and length varied between 2.90 to 5.43 per cent, 3.02 to 10.88 per cent and 0.04 to 0.73 per cent, respectively. Thus, it was found that the shrinkage in thickness was more than diameter and that of shrinkage in thickness was more than length wise. The top portion of bamboo provides more compression and shear strength than bottom portion. The high compression strength was found for smaller length of bamboo as compared to larger length. It was also found that with node bamboo possessed more compression and shear strength than without node and six month old harvested bamboo possessed more compression strength than fresh bamboo.

Abstract

The demand of wood products is continuously increasing in spite of rapid depletion of forests around the globe. Water absorption and desorption in wood are of practical importance since they also affect the mechanical properties of the product. The five wood varieties teak, beechwood, mango, jackfruit and ain were used for study that are popular for timber and furniture in Konkan. These five varieties showed initial high rate of moisture uptake and drying followed by comparatively slower rate. Drying rate was eight times higher than absorption process. Shear strength of all wood varities decreased with increase in moisture content.

Abstract

Three varieties of bamboo viz., Dedrocalamus ritchy (Manga), Dendrocalamus stocksii (Mes) and Dendrocalamus strictus (Manvel) were used to prepare bamboo mats were weaved manually and treated with glue. Urea formaldehyde (resin) was used as glue to prepare bamboo mat boards. The resin application was done by dipping. Bamboo mats were dipped for 10 min in urea formaldehyde. 30 kg of resin was required for complete dipping of bamboo mats. Mats were pressed together at 110°C temperatures and pressure of 150 kg/cm² was applied for 5 min. This is for spreading glue properly. Mats were again pressed at 110°C at a pressure of 200 kg/cm² for 10 min to from bamboo mat boards. Boards were trimmed to a size of 2.1 m × 1.2 m board of 9 mm, 12 mm and 16 mm thickness were prepared. Bamboo mat board can be prepared from Dendrocalamus stocksii (Mes), Dedrocalamus ritchy (Manga) and Dendrocalamus strictus (Manvel) using urea formaldehyde resin. Dedrocalamus ritchy (Manga) was easy to prepare slivers of bamboo. Density of bamboo mat board increased as thickness increases. Maximum density was for Dendrocalamus stocksii (Mes). Water absorption bamboo mat board decreased as thickness increases and was minimum for Dendrocalamus stocksii (Mes). Tensile strength and compressive strength for bamboo mat board increased as thickness increases. For Dendrocalamus stocksii (Mes) maximum tensile strength and maximum compressive strength was 37.83, 43.21 and 48.50 N/mm²and 15.75, 19.21 and 26.30N/mm² for 9, 12 and 16 mm thickness, respectively.

Abstract

Food security of our country is at risk due to heavy yield losses of agricultural crops caused by pests and diseases known together as biotic stresses. Conventional management practices in vogue are not competent under the current situations obscured by the incitants of biotic stresses which have either enhanced their offensive capabilities due to adaptive mutations or regained their pathogenic/ herbivory potential owing to climate change. Numerous causal agents of biotic stresses are also introduced in the country or new regions of the country either through natural dispersal as invasive species, or on account of quarantine irregularities at national or international levels. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to appraise the impact of these new biotic stresses burgeoned in the recent past and to develop novel technologies for their management. To devise an effective preventive and eradicative strategy for containing these biotic stresses, new research innovations need to be practiced such as deciphering basic/molecular mechanism of host-pathogen/insect interactions; endophytic mechanisms of plant protection; nanotechnology in pest management; host resistance strengthening by gene cloning, recombinant DNA technologies, RNA biology, utilizing gene editing technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9, etc. This article presents a comprehensive account of new biotic stresses of agricultural crops built up in the country and also reviews the novel scientific inventions made worldwide which can be further employed to devise more efficient methods for alleviating impact of these biotic stresses of food crops in the country.

Abstract

The SI unit of force is more accurately realized through calibrated dead weights and is linked to the international prototype kilogram or a dead weight force close to 10N. As there is a growing need for traceable, accurate measurements involving micro and nano forces, such mass based force standards do not remain practicable for realizing such low forces. In view of this, National Metrological Institutes (NMIs) have started developing their indigenous facilities for realizing the small forces in order to disseminate the same to the user industries. In this paper, we have discussed the recent trends in the emerging field of low force metrology. The efforts made at NPL to take force measurement capacity to fraction of a Newton are described. A newly designed frame used in a dead weight system for generating the lowest possible force step of 0.5N is reported. The feasibility studies undertaken to increase our capability in realizing small forces further to the mili and nano Newton ranges are also briefly described.

Abstract

The present study evaluated the anticonvulsant potential of petroleum ether and ethanolic extracts seeds of Celastrus paniculatus Willd. On Maximal electroshock and Pentylenetetrazole induce seizures in mice. The extract (petroleum ether and ethanolic) 200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg, 600 mg /kg were given intraperitonially. The latency of seizures, death time and % mortality were observed. EECP and PECP gave significant protection against MES (Maximal electroshock) and PTZ (pentylenetetrazole) induced convulsion. The p value of PECP in PTZ P < 0.001and MES in PECP P < 0.01, P < 0.001. was statistically significant. Phytochemical Screening of the plant revels the presence of alkaloids, tannins, phenolic compound, fatty acids, steroids and flavonoids. The results indicate a possible efficacy potential of the plant extract of Celastrus paniculatus Willd. in convulsion.

Abstract

An easy access to a series of 1,3,4-oxadiazoles bearing a 1-(naphthalen-2-yl)propan-1-one side chain in the 4-position is described. These compounds were obtained starting from commercially available Naphthalene and aromatic acids. The work involves Friedal craft acylation reaction of hydrocarbons i.e. Naphthalene that result in formation of Aroyl propanoic acid and finally this Aroyl propanoic acid is condensed with different aromatic hydrazides and result in formation of 1,3,4 -oxadiazoles. The resulted compounds were screened for their biological activity.

Abstract

The ultrasonic properties of terbium monophosphide have been investigated with its mechanical properties along <100>, <110> and <111> orientations. The second and third order elastic constants have also been calculated at 0K - 300K temperatures range using Coulomb and Born-Mayer potential. For finding the stability and ionic nature of TbP, some of the mechanical parameters have also been evaluated at room temperature. Additionally, thermal conductivity is also calculated using Slack's approach. Finally, ultrasonic attenuation in TbP is calculated. Obtained results of the present investigation are discussed in correlation with available results of previous findings.

Abstract

Determination of shear wave attenuation coefficient in rubbers has significance in many applications, for example in non-destructive evaluation of bonding of rubber linings, acoustic absorbing/transparent coatings in air and underwater acoustic devices, shear wave attenuation tissue characterization, etc. Generally an elaborate and expensive acoustic test setup is used for measurement of acoustic properties of rubber and other acoustic materials. In the present work, a piezoelectric resonator method based on bandwidth of a radial mode piezoelectric disc is proposed. Piezoelectric resonators like quartz controlled microbalance (QCM) are well-known for their use in thin film thickness monitor in vacuum coating units based on based on resonance of quartz element. Likewise, quartz oscillator has also been deployed for viscosity determination. The present work describes a radial mode piezoelectric resonator coupled with rubber pads, wherein the radial oscillations excite shear waves into the rubber. The bandwidth of the resonator is related to the penetration depth (attenuation coefficient) of the shear waves. Bandwidth based on data from literature on decay time constant of a damped piezoelectric resonator has been used to compute the shear wave attenuation coefficient in rubbers. A good degree of agreement is observed between the calculated attenuation coefficient and the experimental value from the literature. The proposed method would provide a simple solution to measure shear wave attenuation coefficient in rubbers or other visco-elastic media at discrete frequencies.

Abstract

Material hardness evaluation is one of the most important and commonly used methods of material or product testing. However, the hardness measurements being done in the industry are of limited accuracy due primarily to non-availability of standard hardness blocks having very precise and accurately assigned hardness values traceable to national primary standard. The National Physical Laboratory has recently added the primary standard of Brinell hardness scale to the other already available Vickers and Rockwell hardness primary standards. The uncertainty of the Brinell hardness standard is within ±1.5% for HB1/1 to HB1/30 and is within ±1.0% for other HB scales, which is reaffirmed through comparison with precision hardness standard blocks. Some of the salient features of the machine are described and the measurement results obtained on standard hardness blocks are reported.

Abstract

A new 1 MN force standard machine using dead weight force up to 100 kN and lever multiplication of dead weight force up to 1000 kN has recently been installed at NPL (I). The metrological performance of the machine including the uncertainty of the force realized and its relative deviation from the force values measured by precision force transfer standards calibrated in the PTB force standard machine of equivalent uncertainty has been evaluated. The measurement results affirm the estimated uncertainty of the force realized, which is within ±20 ppm on the dead weight side and within ±90 ppm on the lever side. The construction and operational mechanism are described and the measurement results are reported in this paper.

Abstract

The presence of log house in agro-tourism is one of type of attraction to the tourists to come for agro-tourism. The tourists come for tourism and they stay in log house. The main advantage of a log house is a healthy living environment. The log house is made up with the locally available wood or light weight wood. The demand for wooden products is continuously increasing day by day. Wood is exposed to both periodic water absorption and desorption process. Understanding water absorption and desorption in wood are of practical importance since they also affect the mechanical properties of the product. In residential building and in industrial application some of the components are often wood (Ostman, 1985). For the purpose of the study, Agro-tourism for farmers is considered as a range of activities, services and amenities provided by farmers and rural people to attract tourist to their area in order to generate extra income for their businesses. Agro-tourism for tourists is considered as anything that connects tourists with the heritage, natural resource or culinary experiences unique to the agricultural industry or a specific region of the country's rural areas. The designed log house was safe from different loads point of view.

Abstract

Wood is one of the earth’s most valuable resources and it conforms to the most varied requirement. There are over 1600 different species of woods which are used for various purposes. Wood shows a remarkably wide range of variation in their properties, timber and the type of end use (Rajput and Shukla, 1996). Wood is a multiuse biological raw material with a high economic importance for a number of industrial sectors such as construction, furniture and the packing industry. It is much more variable than that of materials such as concrete or metal (Michael, 2016). Global production of wood is estimated at 3469 million m³ in 2011, of which 1891 million m³ is fuel wood and 1578 million m³ is industrial round wood. Wood is a natural, renewable and valuable construction material. Since being thought of as naturally resistant to wood degrading organisms. Wood has been used as a shelter and has many outdoor applications thought out human history. However, the durability of wood varies depending on its tree species, chemical composition and the environmental condition. Wood biodegradation occurs in different ways such as fungal, bacterial and insect attack. Fungal decay is the most widespread type of wood degradation. The demand for wooden products is continuously increasing day by day. Wood is exposed to both periodic water absorption and desorption process. Understanding water absorption and desorption in wood are of practical importance since they also affect the mechanical properties of the product. In residential building and in industrial application some of the components are often wood (Ostman, 1985). To develop buildings and its components different engineering properties are important. In the present study, the bending stress of ain was found as 5.67 × 10⁷ kN/m² and compression stress was found as 1.3×10⁷ kN/m².

Abstract

The Journal of Pure and Applied Ultrasonics has been publishing research papers, review articles, thesis summary, etc.on physical ultrasonics besides the other subjects such as non-destructive NDE, underwater acoustics, instrumentation, transducers, etc.. The studies on physical ultrasonicsinclude thermo-acoustic parameters of (i) organic liquid mixtures and inorganic electrolytes, (ii) mechanical and thermal properties of single crystals of various elements and their inter-metallic compositions based on various series of periodic table. It is amazing to see how the subject has developed over the years and authors are looking various possibilities where this research can lead to potential applications in determination of properties such as effective blending of polymers, polymer chain lengths, ionicdissociation, thermal and refractory properties of industry relevant solids.

Abstract

Considering the hydrological and religious significance of the Ganga River and the Manasarovar Lake in India, the present study has been devised to investigate the data related to the place of origin of the Ganges and to investigate the likely connection between waters of the two systems. Satellite data was employed to develop maps and find out the possibility of surface connectivity, whereas isotopic and chemical data, obtained from the field samplings and the published research literatures were used to investigate the possibility of subsurface connectivity of the Gangotri Glacier water with that of the Manasarovar Lake. Topographically, both the water systems are located in different catchment zones, separated by high mountain ridges; rejecting any possibility for the surface connectivity. Similarly, there are significant variations in isotopic and physiochemical properties of the water, suggesting no possibility of surface or sub-surface connectivity between water of the two systems.

Abstract

In the eastern Dharwar craton, the crescent- shaped Cuddapah Basin forms a large intracratonic basin, comprising Meso–Neoproterozoic sedimentary sequence with volcanic rock components. The sedimentary environment of the Cuddapah Basin, in general, is comparable with peri-tidal complex with shallow marine carbonate shelf and beach environment. Systematic geological studies of the Cuddapah Basin are well documented^1,2. The litho-units of the basin are mainly divided into older Cuddapah Supergroup and a younger Kurnool Group. The former is present throughout the basin, while the younger group is seen in its western and northeastern parts. The sediments of the basin overlie the Late Archaean–Lower Proterozoic granitoids intruded by basic and ultrapotassic dykes.
