Mosses were collected in March 1963 from Tehri, Mussoorie, Chakrata and their surroundings in Western Himalayas. The collection includes 110 species belonging to 64 genera and 26 families. A new species Habrodon kashmiriensis is described from Kashmir. Six new records for India are reported from the collections made from the Western Himalayas in recent years. These are Hymenostyliella involuta (Card. et Ther.) Bartr., Astomum crispum (Hedw.) Hamp., Tortula subulata Hedw. var. angustata (Schimp.) Limpr., Funaria calcarea Wahlenb., Bryum alpinum Huds. ex With. and Brachythecium glareosum (Spruc.) B. S. G. All these are described and illustrated.

Abstract

A collection of mosses was made by the author during Sept.-Oct., 1961, from Kashmir which lies between 32° 18'-37° N and 73° 26'-80° E in N. W. corner of India. The areas covered are the mountainous regions surrounding the Kashmir valley with altitudes ranging from 2000-4500 m above sea level. Altogether 414 packets of mosses were collected which yielded 107 species and 6 varieties, spreading over to 51 genera and 22 families. These include one new species Habrodon kashmiriensis Vohra sp. nov. and 6 species and 1 variety new to India. In this paper all the species are enumerated with field data and distribution.

Abstract

Nine populations of Centaurium were studied at Freshfield and Ainsdale, near Southport, Lancashire, England. The two species C. erythraea Rafin. and C. littorale (D. Turner) Gilmour flowered during the same time and were found growing sympatrically in some populations. Cytological studies revealed that both species had approximately the same range of variation in their chromosome number; C. erythaea had n = 7,8,9 and 10 while C. littorale had n = 8,9, 10 and 11. These chromosome numbers are new records for these species. Breeding experiments showed that both the species were self-compatible and largely autogamous but were capable of cross-pollination. Large populations of hybrids were seen at Freshfield. These hybrids were morphologically distinct and almost exactly intermediate between the two species. The hybrids were analysed by the hybrid index method of Anderson (1936) and inspite of being fertile did not show any great variability among themselves and probably represent an F1 generation. Although C. erythaea and C. littorale were sympatric in several different kinds of habitat it was only in Pinus nigra plantations that the hybrids became established.

Abstract

37 species of mosses have been collected from Great Nicobar Island. Among them Taxithelium vernieri (Dub.) Besch., is a new record for India, Leucophanes nicobaricum C. Muell. ex Gangulee and Trichosteleum punctipapillosum Gangulee, endemic to the Islands and so far represented by the type material only, have been collected after more than a century. 17 species occurring on the main land, are new additions to the Island flora, noteworthy among them are: Acanthorrhynchium papillatum (Harv.) Fleisch., Exodictyon blumei (Hamp.) Fleisch., Leucobryum bowringii Mitt., and Wilsoniella decipiens (Mitt.) Alst. Family Pottiaceae, represented by Hyophila involuta (Hook.) Jaeg., and Semibarbula orientalis (Web.) Wijk. et Marg., is reported for the first time.
