Analyses of pH, total dissolved solids, CO,, HCO3, Cl, SO4, Ca, Mg, Na and K are presented for water samples from dune slacks in Rameswaram Island. Comparison of these analyses has been attempted with well waters from the area, sea water and world average fresh water. It is inferred that these slacks are under the influence of sea water but ion-exchange process similar to those in arid alkali soils appear to be responsible for Ca/HCO3 ratios of less than unity and Na/Cl and Mg/Cl ratios greater than those in sea water. Exceptionally high Na2Co3 and NaHCO3, contents in one of the slack waters is explained on the basis of sulphate reduction due to favourable conditions developed locally there.- Ecological Studies on the Soil and Vegetation of Krusadi Group of Islands in the Gulf of Manaar

The account presents the plant ecology with a description of soils and other related features of the Krusadi group of islands situated in the Gulf of Manaar approximately between 9°14'-9°15'N and 79°10.5'-79°14.5' E. Data on pH, organic matter contents, total soluble salts, sodium chloride contents and calcium carbonate contents in the soils of different habitats are presented in tabular form and an attempt made to correlate vegetation with the soil features. A classification of vegetation situations rather than strictly vegetation type has been brought out and comparison made with the main neighbouring island of Rameswaram with similar climate. The paper includes a vegetation map of the area prepared during the field work.- Ecological Studies of Saurashtra Coast and Neighbouring Islands: IV. Piram Island

The Plant ecology of Piram, a small narrow off shore island situated 21°36':72°21' in the Gulf of Cambay is presented in this paper. Based on habitat, substratum and edaphic features the plant communities of the island have been distinguished into 7 main categories under three vegetational zones. 74 species are enumerated and the flora resembles the one on mainland. The first ecologically annotated list of Vascular plants will form a background for a study of future changes.- The Environmental Impact Analysis for Three Mangrove Species of Indian Sunderbans

The paper deals with three mangrove species of Indian Sunderbans namely, Heritiera fomes Bach.-Him, Nypa fruticans Wamb. and Acrostichum aureum L. which have become endangered due to different environmental impact of them. The main factors causing rapid decrease in the population of these three species are (i) Lack of fresh water supply, (ii) Human population pressure, and (iii) Over exploitation. The problem has been assessed and measures suggested to save the three species.- Ranunculus Sardous Crantz. - a New Introduction in India
