History and Development of Special Libraries

This paper gives the meaning, definition, origin, characteristics, types and historical development of Special libraries. The Special libraries are “Special “in their collections, users and services. There are different types of special libraries. Uniqueness characteristics’ of each one has been explained. Finally concluded with, the relevance of Ranganathan’s five Laws of Library Science in the development of Special Libraries.
