The unexpected happened in 1996: the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) emerged as the largest party at the centre eclipsing the Congress. Although the government that the BJP formed in coalition with other parties lasted just 13 days, the BJP has not lost the ground it has gained. Both in 1998 and again in 1999 it was the BJP which put together a coalition to form a government at the centre.
