Abstract
The void ratio and the porosity of the bank soil around Maijan and Mathola are from 0.32 to 1.38, and from 0.29 to 0.58, respectively, and show the characteristic of soft clay. In the top clayey soil with higher void ratio and porosity, consolidation has not occurred. The heavy water pressure with the underlying sandy soil with less void ratio and porosity has promoted erosion of the river banks.
