Systematic cum traverse geological mapping of an area of about 15000 sq. km in the Kishtwar region by the author brought out a lithological succession comprising metamorphites (Proterozoic) unconformably overlain by Palaeozoic-Mesozoic Tethyan sediments. The metamorphites of the area have been lithostratigraphically classified in the light of code of stratigraphic nomenclature. Thus, the metamorphic sequence occurring in the area comprises Brama, Dachhin, Padar and Marwah Formations together making up the Kishtwar Group. The existence of the 'Main Central Thrust' and 'Kishtwar Window' is also reviewed.
