Marine sediments differ from terrestrial sediments in a number of ways and hence it becomes important to analyze their geotechnical properties and processes in a detailed manner. A brief summary of the nature of marine sedimentary environment, types and distribution of marine sediments, consolidation behavior, static shear strength and response under dynamic loading is presented in this paper. A knowledge of these aspects would greatly help the civil engineer/geologist to better understand the sedimentological and environmental conditions under which submarine slopes experience phenomena like long-term downslope displacements, slumps. slides, and other mass wasting processes.
