Geomorphological studies reveal that the river Cauvery as we see it today is a composite river made in up of two distinct parts which have been brought together as the result of an upwarp across the flow in comparatively recent times. The effect of the upwarp has been the rejuvenation of the river leading to its diversion southwards and linking it up with another east flowing river at a lower elevation, through a series of narrow stepwise diversion channels.
