The present paper offers a new interpretation of the geology and biostratigraphy of the Lower Tertiary Formations exposed on the Bilaspur-Shimla Highway, Himachal Pradesh. The structural interpretation of the frequent repetition of the Subathu-Dagshai Formations have been made in the light of presently recognised faunal zones in the upper part of the Subathu Formation. Geological mapping, coupled with palaeontological observations. reveal that the repetition of the Subathu (Green facies cf. Raiverman and Raman, 1971) and Dagshai (Red facies cf. Raiverman and Raman, 1971) Formations on the BiJaspur-Shimla Highway can be better explained by folding and faulting instead of facies intertonguing.
