Earlier studies have shown that in a given scientific subject, a relatively few core journals are likely to contain a substantial number of papers and articles bearing on that discipline, and the rest of the papers and articles are usually scattered in a large number of journals that are peripheral to the discipline. In this paper, an attempt has been made to identify the core list of research journals frequently used by Indian geoscientists in the field of earth science. Despite some limitations, corejournals can be used as the basis for developing current awareness services and for resource allocation in developing core collection in Indian libraries and information centres.

Abstract

Earlier studies have shown that in a given scientific subject, a relatively few core journals are likely to contain a substantial number of papers and articles bearing on that discipline, and the rest of the papers and articles are usually scattered in a large number of journals that are peripheral to the discipline. In this paper, an attempt has been made to identify the core list of research journals frequently used by Indian geoscientists in the field of earth science. Despite some limitations, corejournals can be used as the basis for developing current awareness services and for resource allocation in developing core collection in Indian libraries and information centres.
