Geological and geochemical studies of the two previous decades stress the significance of carbonaceous material as probable source of oil and gas accumulations in many parts of the world. The Shebelinka field, Donetz basin, U.S.S.R., the gas fields in the northwest Siberian basin, the giant Groningen gas field of the Netherlands, hydrocarbon accumulations in the Viking graben of the North Sea and the offshore oil and gas fields of the Gippsl and basin of southeastern Australia are some examples.

The paper reviews studie, on relationship between coal and petroleum and points out their relevance to oil exploration in Nigeria and India.
