The occurrence of marine Palaeocene sediments with age-diagnostic larger foraminifera in Surat-Broach area was first reported by Narayana Rao (1939) from Tarkeshwar, near Surat. A perusal of the publications bearing on the Lower Tertiary stratigraphy and foraminifera of the area revealed that the foraminiferal limestone band from Tarkeshwar originally dated as Palaeocene was later assigned to the Upper Eocene by Narayana Rao himself. This is also supported by an examination of the material collected from the Surat-Broach area during the present investigation. Up to the present there is no authentic record of the occurrence of marine Palaeocene outcrop in the Surat Broach area.
