Abstract

A new family, Acephalidae n. fam. and a new genus Acephalus n. gen. are proposed in this communication to accommodate a new septate gregarine (Apicomplexa : Conoidasida) Acephalus sundarbanensis n. sp. collected from the midgut of an orthopteran insect host, Euconocephalus incertus from Sundarban region of West Bengal, India. The characteristics of this new family and its affinity with the closely related families are discussed.

Abstract

Generally in orchard plant fertilizers are applied twice in a year once in the pre-rainy season (Jyistha and Ashar) and other in the post-rainy season (Aswin and Kartik). In case of papaya and lemon fertilizers are applied thrice in a year. In case of banana fertilizers are applied after one and half month?s interval. The general method of fertilizer application in case of orchard is Basin placement. In this method a line is drawn around the stem along border line of the shade of the tree at noon. Along this line a trench is dug 30 cm in breadth and 30 cm depth. Precaution is taken so that no ischolar_mains are to be cut. There are three methods of localized placement of fertilizer application like band placement, hole placement and half circle. Band placement of fertilizer application is suitable for potato.

Abstract

In 6 B. C., Khana, wife of Mihir and daughter-in-law of Barah of village Chungi of Malabar Province, mentioned some Indigenous Technical Knowledges (ITKs) according to her experiences which are now known as Khana's proverbs. Khana's proverbs have given importance on texture of soil, tillage, environment, time of sowing, distance, tillering, organic manure, micronutrient, irrigation, plant protection, crop rotation, mixed cropping and market value of crop ( Khanar Bachan , Prantosh Kumar Ray). Mandal (2011) mentioned 27 number of Indigenous Technical Knowledge and Skills (ITKS) that are practiced by the farmers of Sundarban regions towards sustainable agriculture. Some of Khana's proverbs on agriculture in Bengali are selected in this paper and discussed in the light of modern agricultural science.

Abstract

Insect traps are used to monitor or directly reduce population of insects and other arthropods. These traps typically use food, visual lures, chemical attractants and pheromones as bait and are installed so that they do not injure other animals or humans or result in residues of foods or feeds. Visual lures use light, bright colors and shapes to attract pests. Chemical attractants or pheromones may attract only a specific sex. Insect traps are sometimes used in pest management programs instead of pesticides but these are more often used to look at seasonal and distributional patterns of pest occurrence. This information may then be used in other pest management approaches.

Abstract

Sundarban is regarded as the largest delta of the Ganges and declared as Biosphere Reserve in the year 1989. There are 19 Blocks in the Sundraban, of which 13 Blocks are in South 24 Parganas and 6 Blocks in North 24 Parganas. On 25th May, 2009 a cyclone of very short duration, termed Aila, struck this region due to which most of the paddy cultivated areas in the Sundarban are submerged under saline water of adjacent rivers. As a result agro-ecosystem was highly affected. Main crop of Sundarban in the kharif season is paddy.

Abstract

Paddy seeds var. WGL-20471 (both certified and truthfully labeled) were collected from different dealer shops of Basanti Block of South 24 Parganas during December, 2010 to test the germination percentage. According to Indian Seed Act, 1966 the minimum germination percentage of paddy seeds are as follows : Paddy Crops-Foundation seed (F)-85%; Certified seed (C)-85%; Truthfully Labelled seed (TL)-nil. Germination test of paddy seeds was done by Rolled Towel Test method. Two wet towels were placed on a smooth table top. One hundred seeds were placed on the upper surface of the towels and covered by two wet towels. A fold was made at the bottom of the towel to prevent the seeds from falling out.

Abstract

The paddy plants attacked by yellow stem boier at flowering stage produce ears devoid of grain, known as the 'white ears'. The 'white ears" may also be caused by the neck blast, a fungal disease. During the Boro season of paddy (varieties : I. R. - 36, I. E. T. - 4786) surveys were conducted at Basanti Block of Sundarban region of West Bengal, India from December 2004 to April 2005 to find out the differences between two similar symptoms of white ears, caused by yellow stem bores and by neck blasts for facilitating their control measures. Data were collected at an interval of 7 days. Nature of damage was recorded during each survey trip. During investigation, it has been observed that about 20% of white ears were caused by yellow stem borer and about 80% of white ears by neck blast.

Abstract

During the Aman season of paddy from July, 2005 to December, 2005 surveys were conducted at Basanti Block of Sundarban region of West Bengal, India. Data were collected at an interval of 7 days and the nature of damage was recorded during each survey trip. It has been observed that Patnai and Diidhsar varieties of paddy are mostly affected with false smut due to heavy rainfall from 18.10.05 to 24.10.05. Other varieties like Rupshal, Ruglmshal are less affected. These varieties are local and photo sensitive. Their flowering stage is usually from 3rd week of October to 1st week of November.

Abstract

Aman paddy is grown in an area of 23050 hectare (2005-06) in Basanti Block of Sundarban region of West Bengal. The production and productivity of Aman paddy in this block were 52471.57 MT (Clean rice) and 2267.55 kg/hectare (Clean rice) respectively. This may be hampered by several factors like pests and diseases. During the Aman season of paddy from July to December, 2006 at Basanti Block of Sundarban region of West Bengal, India surveys were undertaken at an interval of 7 days and data pertaining to the nature of damage of Aman paddy were recorded during each survey trip. During investigation, it has been observed that paddy was mostly affected with one pest (rice leaf folder), one fvmgal disease (sheath blight), one bacterial disease (BLB) and zinc deficiency. Rice leaf folder is a lepidopteran pest of paddy (Atwal and Dhaliwal, 2002). Sheath blight is a fungal disease of paddy (Singh, 2005). Heavy rainfall and water stagnation may cause zinc deficiency of paddy (Gour ct ai, 1999). It is probable that heavy rainfall of 131.9 mm, 110.7 mm and 88.3 mm on 21.09.06, 22.09.06 and 23.09.06 respectively may provide a favourable condition for these pest and disease infestations. It seems that concentration of rainfall at the tillering stage may enhance the infestation of those pests and diseases.

Abstract

On-farm trial studies were made at the farmer's field of Joygopalpur Mouza, Jyotishpur G. P., Basanti Block of Sundarban region, West Bengal during the rabi (winter) season of 2013-14 (December 2013 to February 2014) and 2014-15 (December 2014 to February 2015) with liquid fertilizers and also in rabi season of 2015-16 (December 2015 to February 2016) with organic manures to understand the effect of different fertilizer packages as well as the effect of two organic manures like cow dung compost and vermi compost on production potentials of two varieties of potato, viz., Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Pukhraj under zero tillage cultivation condition in the Sundarban region, West Bengal, India. It was revealed that maximum plant height was obtained under T2 treatment followed by T3 treatment in different fertilizer packages while maximum plant height was noted under T4 treatment followed by T2 in case of two organic manures treatments. Like-wise maximum number of tubers per hill was from T2 treatment in different fertilizer packages and maximum number of tubers was encountered from T4 treatment with organic manures. Tuber weight per hill and tuber yield per hectare was recorded highest from T2 treatment and T4 treatment (statistically superior) respectively with chemical fertilizer packages and organic compost cases.
