Neurosecretory cells (NSCs) normally occur in the ganglia of the central nervous system preferably located in the brain. They generally resemble monopolar nerve cells but they are characterized by showing cytological evidence of secretion and usually by discharging their products into the hemolymph. Here, an attempt is made to recognize the NSCs located in various regions of tripartite cerebral lobe of a water beetle, Cybister tripunctatus OL.

Three types of neurosecretory cells have been identified in the cerebral lobes of this adult water beetle. According to the morphological features and staining affinities with Ewen's Paraldehyde Fuchsin (PF) and Heidenhain's Azan-Aniline Blue (A AB) they are classified as 'A', 'B' and 'C' type cells. These cells have been found in certain locations of the cerebral complex, namely, median portion of protocerebrum, lateral region of protocerebrum and tritocerebrum. Thus, three endocrinal centres are present in the brain of this adult insect.

Abstract

Neurosecretory cells (NSCs) have been identified as endocrinal unicellular glands in insects which secrete hormones responsible for the internal chemical coordination. With the help of the specific staining techniques, viz., Bargmann's Chrome-alum, Haematoxylin Phloxine (CHP) and Ewen's Paraldehyde Fuchsin (PF), the neurosecretory cells are distinctly recognized in the brain and the various ganglia of the ventral nerve cord of insects. These techniques not only provide topographical picture of the neurosecretory cell (NSC) but evaluate both, the qualitative and quantitative characteristic of the neurosecretory material so that different cell types and stages of activity of the neurosecretory system during physiological state can easily be recognized. The NSCs located in the brain of C. tripunctatus are classified according to their staining affinity and cytomorphological characteristics into four types, viz., A, B, C, and D types. Histochemical staining techniques applied for the demonstration of proteinic materials in NSCs located in cerebral complex of C. tripunctatus indicate that NSCs contain varied amount of SS - Proteins (Cystine-rich proteins), SH- Proteins (Cysteine- rich proteins), Tyrosine - rich Proteins and NH2-bound Proteins.

Abstract

The State of Jharkhand has a unique relation with forest since time immemorial. The word Jharkhand connotes area of land covered with forests. Therefore, literally as well as symbolically, Jharkhand is associated with forests. The total recorded forest area of the State is 23,605 km2 which is 29.61% of the geographical area of the State. Of the total recorded forest area, Reserved Forests constitute 18.58%, Protected Forests 81.28% and Unclassified Forests 0.14%. Jharkhand Forest Department is entrusted with all matters pertaining to forests and forestry including protecting and conserving forests and wildlife resources of the State through scientific forest management practices within the ambit of policies, acts and rules in vogue. One of its main objectives is to bewildering sustainable conservation and management of biodiversity - rich ecosystems through in-situ conservation, such as, Biosphere Reserves, National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. Presently Jharkhand has only one National Park, altogether eleven Wildlife Sanctuaries but devoid of any of Biosphere Reserves. In the present paper major wildlife species and their in-situ conservation strategies in the protected areas of Jharkhand State are discussed.
