The design of structure is never the product of a few rigid line design calculations and scientific techniques. In fact it has always been a compromise between aesthetics and concept of stress-morphology and few other relevent factors like economy, availability of material etc. In the ancient era of Egyptians or Greeks, the structures were mostly governed by aesthetics. Few successful structures were quite there. But failures were also numerous. Failure in the sense of insufficient resistive property of structural members or unnecessarily great resistive property of structure hampering structural rightness.- A Study of Soil Mass Characteristics in Design of Buried Conduits
