Abstract

An appreciable exploitation of groundwater from Tarai confined aquifer system, Nainital district, has been started since 1969 to meet agricultural need of the area. Due to this changed draft condition, the piezometric surface has declined on an average by 5.5 meters during, last three years. An attempt has been made in this paper to estimate the change in intergranular stress condition in the aquifer system and to set a limit to the declining piezometric surface so that no consolidating pressure may develop.
