The Inaugural Session was presided over by Prof S. K. Sen, Vice-Chancellor, Jadavpur University and Chairman, Organising Comtnittee.

In his Welcome Address Prof, P. Som, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology emphasised on the scope of 'Terotechnology' in the context of maintenance of plants and machineries in production and other systems. Maintenance during breakdown, observed Prof. Som, is more common than the preventive maintenance which is lackiner perhaps due to lack of proper understanding on value and cost factor. Again, in many cases the capital invest* ment for the replacement of plants and machi* neries, as for instance, say, a motor car is so high that people are forced to adapt a costly method for maintaining the car. For frequent breakdown, replacement of worn out parts and at times out of fashioned cars are costly both in terms of time, inconveniences and money. The same things are also applicable in the case of costly plants and machineries used in the productive chain. A new approached of analysis in this direction is necessary and perhaps terotechnology, according to Prof. Som, could device some ways and means to encounter such situation.
