Approximately 50% of the sewage plants in the USA are designed for ‘primary treatment’. While such plants remove 30-45% of the suspended solids and BOD, they do not remove any of the true ‘colloid fraction.’ The sewage colloid in the size range of 0.1-1.0 micron is the principal source of tastes and odours in downstream waters employed for domestic supply.
