Irrigation in West Bengal is developing at a faster rate since Independence. One third of the total cultivable land has since been brought under irrigation. This includes irrigation from all sources e.g. major, medium and minor irrigation projects, private canals, small and big tubewells, river lift schemes, tanks etc. In the next 10 years irrigation potential will be created for another 24 lakh acres by major and medium irrigation projects alone when the Upper Kangsabati, Teesta Barrage Project and other medium projects under contemplation is likely to be completed.
