With termination of the war and the attainment of independence the demand of steel in India for new projects and national industries has increased. On the other hand, the two major producing plants report a fall in production due to various factors with no prospect of an early increase. Government is also contemplating installation of new plants but it will be some years before these plants are laid and put into operation. It is therefore imperative that this valuable commodity should be saved not merely by restricting its use but also by not wasting it in its use. It is with this object in view that the following suggestions by an engineer with experience of over twenty years in the design of structural steelwork with a well-known firm of engineers and contractors, are offered.
