Among the innovative genetic options available for enhancing the rice production hybrid rice is one of the technologies which is feasible and readily adoptable. In the early stage of the hybrid rice breeding programme, breeders identified restorer lines by testcross screening from rice germplasm pools. The availability of stable cytoplasmic male sterility and fertility restoring system is vital for commercial exploitation of heterosis in rice. In the present experiment, seven cms lines of divergent origin were studied for their pollen fertility and spikelet fertility in first year at DRR, Hyderabad. Out of them top five were reevaluated in next year at Varanasi location. These five stable cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMS) of rice having wild abortive (WA) cytoplasmic male sterility source were crossed with 30 genotypes to identify their restorer/maintainer nature. Most of the genotypes expressed differential fertility reactions when cross with cms lines. Among the genotypes tested, no one was found to be common as effective restorer for all the five cms lines. Genotypes found to be effective restorers for four CMS lines, Sarju 52, Malviya 36, HUR 105, Narendra 359, Pusa Sugandh 3, Pusa Sugandh 4 and NDR 118 were the promising effective restorers for most of the CMS lines. Keywords

With the aim of increasing interest in exploitation of heterosis in rice, there is an urgent need to make available various CMS lines and good restoration capability lines for combining ability tests. The knowledge of combining ability is useful to assess nicking ability in self-pollinated crops and at the same time elucidate the nature and magnitude of gene actions involved, provides to the breeder about insight of nature and relative magnitude of fixable and non-fixable genetic variances i.e. due to dominance or epistatic components. This study provides useful information for the selection of donor parents for effective breeding programme. Such informations are required to design efficient breeding programmes for rapid dynamic and strategic crop improvement for quantitative along with qualitative nature of traits. Variation with in crosses and parents were significant for all the characters and also magnitude of variance among parents vs crosses were also significantly for all characters except day to 50% flowering. The SCA variances were higher than the corresponding GCA variances for all the traits. The significant and positive gca effects for grain yield per plant were exhibited only by 3 males namely, Swarna, NDRK 5026 and NDRK 5032 which were found to be good general combiners. Among 24 hybrids studied, none of the hybrids exhibited high sca effects for all 10 characters. Keywords

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple cereal crops. Among the various possible approaches, hybrid rice cultivation is the most feasible and practical one in view of its 10-15 per cent yield advantage over the high yielding varieties. To obtain the benefits of hybrid rice cultivation, it is essential to develop effective hybrid seed production techniques. Poor panicle exertion of CMS lines of most of the released hybrids of rice is affecting the seed yield considerably. To overcome this problem, gibberellic acid (GA3) is being used in hybrid seed production. But the high cost of it in India, limits its use in large quantity. Therefore, the aim of the present investigation was to test the effectiveness of GA3 and search for other-cheaper alternatives and to enhance the effectiveness of GA3. Various chemicals such as, GA3, boric acid, urea, glycine, etc. were twice applied either individually or in combination of various concentrations at 10% heading and 50% heading by hand sprayer. Total 9 different treatments were used and data were recorded on ten floral and yield traits. The percentage of exserted stigma (%), anther length(mm), panicle length (cm), filled spikelets per panicle, plat height (cm), grain yield /plant(g) were highest found in application of GA3 80ppm + glycine 80ppm coupled with flag leaf clipping and rope pulling. Panicle exsertion (%), and spikelets length (cm) were highest found in glycine 80ppm coupled with flag leaf clipping and rope pulling. The panicle exertion was higher to the extent of 40 per cent with glycine 80ppm coupled wih coupled with flag leaf clipping and rope pulling. The increases in seed yield with GA3 80ppm and glycine 80ppm coupled with flag leaf clipping and rope pulling was to the extent of 200 per cent, over control. Spraying of GA3 80ppm in combination with glycine 80ppm coupled with flag leaf clipping and rope pulling resulted in higher profits. Results showed that glycine 80ppm was found be alternative of gibberellic acid. Keywords

Twenty hybrids along with three cytoplasmic sterile lines (IR 58025A, IR 98897, IR 56256A, DRR 9A and DRR10A) and eighteen pollen parents were studied for character association for yield and its components. Correlation studies in conjunction with heterosis estimates gives some idea as to the relative importance of each of the components to final grain yield. It also gives some idea about the changed relationship between character pairs in parents as well as in hybrids, although it is a established fact that nature and magnitude of associations would vary with the composition of the material. In present study, simple correlation co-efficients were estimated at both phenotypic and genotypic levels in parents as well as hybrids, separately. It was observed that the magnitude of association varied in hybrids and parents. In hybrids the yield was primarily influenced by 100 grain weight, effective tillers per plant and number of fertile grains per panicle. In case of parents grain yield per plant found to be significantly and positively correlated with days to 50% flowering, panicle length, effective tillers per plant and number of fertile grains per panicle. Characters like effective tiller number per plant and fertile grains per panicle were significantly and positively correlated with each other as well as with grain yield per plant. Keywords

Genetic variability in any crop is pre-requisite for selection of superior genotypes over the existing cultivars. In the Asia and Pacific region, rice is the main staple food and the most important source of employment and income for rural people. Knowledge of variability and heritability of yield and its contributing traits helps in the selection of appropriate strategy for a breeding programme for evolving superior varieties. Therefore, the present investigation was conducted to assess the variability present in F1 hybrids and their parents for yield and yield contributing traits. In present study, Variance analysis for all the characters revealed significant variation among the genotypes studied, indicating the existence of sufficient amount of variability. The GCV, PCV, broad sense heritability and genetic advances as percent of mean suggested number of panicle bearing tillers per plant, spikelets fertility, plant height, panicle length, number of spikelets per panicle, test weight, and grain yield per plant were important contributing traits and selection based on these traits would be most effective. Keywords
